Error Message (MCI) when I try to reinstall Earthlink

I have done a complete reinstall of Windows XP on my Dell and am unable to connect to the internet.  I am a newbie and want to be able to do this myself.
These drivers are missing:  Multimedia Audio Controller; SM Bus Controller; Ethernet Controller.
The network wizard does not work.
I added a D Link wireless router because I want to connect my laptop and my desktop to the Net using my Earthlink DSL.  The laptop works fine.  The LinkSys router worked fine before, but my buddy recommended using D Link for a better firewall (issues with viruses brought in by my teenagers).
Every time I try to work things out, I get a message that the modem cannot hear a dial tone.  Do I even need a dial tone, since I'm not dialing?
When I pop in the Earthlink CD to try to do SOMETHING, anything, I get this error message:
"MCI Error
No wave device is installed that can play files in the current format.  To install a wave device, go to Control Panel, click Pri"
That's it - incomplete & I don't know what it means or what to do.
I can connect to the internet through the laptop so I can put any necessary drivers on a CD if I need to.
Oh, help.  I'm losing my mind.  Thanks!

All of these problems appear to be the result of not having installed the chipset drivers for your motherboard.  Since the ethernet adapter and the audio adapter are integrated on the motherboard, they will not be recognized by Windows until the chipset drivers are present.  Once the chipset drivers are present you will need to install the drivers for the ethernet adapter and the audio controller (probably the video card as well).  All of these drivers should be on the Dell Resource CD.  They can also be downloaded from the Dell Support site by clicking on the Product Support tab at the top left of the Dell forum window.   I could provide direct links and instructions for your particular model, but you have not said which model computer you have.

Yes, the MCI message makes sense because the drivers for the multimedia audio controller are not installed.

See the following document for intructions on installing all the drivers.  Be sure to do the chipset drivers first.

Look under "Install Drivers and Software"

That's because I couldn't remember - but I've checked & it's Dimension 4550.

Does that MCI error message make any sense?

Thank you!

I am saved!  I did as you suggested and reinstalled the chipset and the other drivers and now it is golden.  I'm a believer.

Thank you a million times.
