Ethernet cable is connected but does nothing
So this is really bizzare. I have an Inspiron 8600 (it's four years old) and I've run into a strange problem. I used an ethernet cable to access the internet a few times when I first got the laptop 4 years ago but then I discovered wireless and never used the cables since. Now I moved into a dorm and wireless isn't available anymore but ethernet cables are provided. My roommates can use the internet fine with the cables but for some reason my laptop can't. When I plug it in the little message pops up and says "connected to Local Network (or whatever) at 100Mbs" and the orange light in the back lights up. However when I open Firefox nothing loads, I can't even use Outlook to receive or send emails. There's nothing wrong with the cable, my roommates can use each cable fine with their laptops, while mine doesn't work with any.
I guess the ethernet card might be bad but when I check it says Network Status (the light is lit) OK. So... is this a common problem? Does anyone know how to fix it? Thanks!

If Jesse's suggestion doen't fix the problem, to help troubleshoot this problem, go to Start > Run and type cmd then click OK. In the command prompt window that opens, type ipconfig /all then hit the enter key. Write down the output from this command or select it and save it to a txt file, then copy this output into a reply to this message.

Well anyways, I checked for driver updates but it says that the driver for the ethernet card is up to date. Also I'm assuming I need to be connected to the ethernet cable to check ipconfig /all right? I'm not near an ethernet cable right now but I'll check as soon as possible. Just so you know, I've already tried ipconfig /release then /renew.. doesn't change anything though. If you guys have any more advice that'd be cool, I really appreciate your help.
Also, this is what ipconfig /all looks like while I'm not connected to an ethernet cable:

According to your readout, your ethernet connection isn't configured to obtain an IP address automatically. Access your Network Connections, for your ethernet connection icon right click it and select Properties. In the window, select TCP/IP, then hit the Properties tab. Select both obtain IP address and DNS servers automatically? Then reboot your system? This should get you back up and running!
