Have internet but can't access the network

I just set up my new Dimension 4700 yesterday. It has Windows XP SP2 on it and I've got most of it running just the way I want. Unfortunately I'm having some really frustrating network problems.

Since I am writing this, I have internet access. The problem is that I can't seem to connect to my own network. I go through the whole network setup wizard, and reboot the computer. Then when I go to My Network Places --> Entire Network --> Microsoft Windows Network, I can see the network I created. When I click on it, it waits for 2-3 minutes, then gives me a popup saying: " is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The list of servers for this workgroup is currently unavailable."

I'm supposed to be the network administrator! This is the server!

I have a laptop that is recognizing my wireless network signal and connecting to the internet with no problems. I've set up the same network name on that computer and it can see itself no problems. I can't see either computer from the other and can't access my printer through the network from my laptop.

If someone out there can please help me it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

On any computer running Windows XP with SP1, disable the Windows XP firewall. It will not allow File and Printer Sharing. On computers running Windows XP with SP2, make sure that the Windows XP firewall has File and Printer Sharing checked off on the Exceptions tab. If you are running any third party firewalls, like those provided by such programs as Zone Alarm, Norton Internet Security, or McAfee Security Center, make sure they are configured to allow local network traffic.

Thanks for responding, but I had already checked those settings. It's still not letting me see the network for some reason. Does anyone have any other ideas? I'm not sure why Microsoft is making this so complex. I don't remember having any problems when I set up the network originally with my previous desktop. It was running XP at SP1. I can't see any other settings or anything that look like they would be interfering that's new in SP2...

Let me ask this one more time.  Are you absolutely 100% sure that all firewalls have been properly configured.  The reason I am asking again is because so many times people insist that they have configured the firewall properly, only to find, after tens of messages back and forth, that they eventually say something like "Oh, I didn't realize that Norton (or McAfee) has a fiewall that wasn't configured properly.  99% of the time when you get the message you are getting, it is because of an improperly configured fiewall.  If you have any doubt, uninstall Norton, McAfee, or whatever other security software you have, just to make sure.

I have to apologize. I had turned off the firewall completely (the computer came with Norton internet security) and it still didn't work. Apparently I had to turn on the firewall and play around with the "Network Detector". Thank you very much for the help. Everything seems to be functional now. People are lucky to have you around to help them out.

Thanks again!
