Are you sure it does not have a onboard NIC? . . the specs say that model does.

You can purchase a PCI 10/100 ethernet network card for less than $10 at places like CompUSA, OfficeMax, BestBuy, Circuit City, and probably even Wal Mart.  Install the card and its drivers and you should be set to go.

Yes, it will work, but usb ethernet adapters are not as reliable as PCI network adapters and it will cost you about 3 times as much as a PCI adapter.

No matter which PCI network card you get the installation is the same.  Buy the cheapest one you can find.  Dell's support site has user guides for each model with excellent instructions on how to install a PCI card.  It's very easy.  If you post the model of your computer, I can give a link to the user guide for that model.

Now I'm confused.  I thought the computer you were trying to hook up was a computer running Windows 98, yet you show the 4600c as running Windows XP.  The 4600c has a built - in ethernet adapter.

Sorry, there is no documentation on the Dell web site that would show you how to install a PCI card in a Packard Bell computer.  You would need to open the case, remove one screw to open the back panel behind the PCI slot you want to install the card in, install the card, and replace the screw.  Then turn on the computer and install drivers for the card.
