How do I get rid of ICS with XP?

XP with all SP2 and all patches
Dimension 4500, ethernet HW connected to router

Installed XP and seem to have annoying network issues.

I should not have ran the net wizard since I ended up with a connection that  indicates my PC connects thru another using ICS when in fact it connects to a router. Despite rerunning net wizards and trying everything I can think of, I can't make my PC realize it's connected directly to the router (or internet). I seem to have a lot of "generic host process (svhost.exe) failures that kill the firewall and other processes. Also, it won't let me share a printer.

I am quite experienced with windows, network configuration issues, virus and spyware issues and would like to get rid of ICS. I haven't removed the network adapter or tried uninstalling services but the wizards just does't do it.

Been fighting this for a month, Help

Under My Network, I have shown:

Internet Gateway - Internet connection
Lan or High Speed Internet - Local Area Connection

Neither properties have this ADVANCE tab to turn on/off ICS. Perhaps ICS is not on after all, is there a way to tell by looking at services or something else?

To disable ICS, go to Start > Network and Internet Connections > Network Connections.  Right click on a network connection and select Properties from the drop down menu.  Click on the Advanced tab and remove the checkmark under Internet Connection Sharing.  Do this for all network connections.  As you have seen, if you answer one question wrong when using the network Wizard, it messes everything up.   To see how to set things up manually, try the tutorials at www.homenethelp.com

You must not be doing something right if there is no Advanced tab.  The Internet Gateway connection is likely the USB connection to your braodband modem. With a router, you will not use this connection at all.  If your modem is plugged into anything with a USB connection, unplug it, as it will not be be used with a router.  Please explain how you have everything connected.

I have no usb connections  to anything but printer and scanner and I have no-dial-ups at all. The single ethernet is hardwired to a MN-700 microsoft router which connects to a broadband cable modem. It seems as though the internet connection status considers the router as the main ICS computer and my computer is a satelite off that. But I don't want anthing but a connection to the internet through the router. I tried network wizards several times and the status of my internet connection on my PC shows this:

internet -- internet gateway -- my computer

The status of the local area connection show nothing but "connected"

Maybe this is what is supposed to show, I have good connectivity!

hi,

for starters i would stop the ICS service on the XP machine.

Set it to manual or disabled and you should be fine. If things work the way you want it, you can always remove ICS but that is not needed. With the ICS service stopped you are fine.

Hope this helps.
