How do I share files between Laptop and Desktop

I am trying to share files between my Inspiron 5100 running Windows XP and my Desktop running Windows 2000.  This would also allow me to wirelessly connect my laptop to the printer via the desktop.  I also have a wireless Dell router to connect the two.

Anyone have any easy to follow insructions?

Are both machines connected to a router?
If so, make sure that TCP/IP protocols are installed on each.
Make sure the "workgroup" name on each machine is the same.
right click on the folder, or printer, you want to share, and select "share".
When you browse "my network places" you should see the other computer and
andy folders or printers you've shared.
These are very compressed instructions, but those of us who read the boards are ready to help.
good luck,

Yes, they are both connected to a router, but the next two steps is where I am really "dumb" at.  However, once I have them "connected to each other I know how to share and view folders.  Any additional help is more than appreciated.

OK, I found some directions which are REALLY helpful.  The only problem now is that when I am trying to rename my computer and workgroup, I am getting a message on my older computer that says "You must install networking before you can change this computer's domain membership."  You should also know that I recently reformatted my hard drive.

The other computer is working great!

I will presume you are working in XP...

find "Add/Remove" programs (it's on the control panel)
along the left side, you will find "add/remove windows components"
opening that will reveal a lot of checked boxes,
find the box that says "networking" and check it. (cause it to have a check by it... don't just look at it)
I believe this will install the tcp/ip services for xp.

The procedure for doing this under W98 is similar, only the "windows components" is a Tab at the top of the "add/remove programs" screen.

once the networking icon is on the screen, right click on it and choose "properties". You may need to install tcp/ip as a system service from a list of items.... it's been a while...
I believe this is a general outline, but if someone would like to fill in the blanks for this person's benefits, jump right in!
