How to go wireless

I have a Inspiron 1150 notebook. I am connected to the internet by cable using a Motorola SB5120 Surfboard cable modem.  What do I need to do to go wireless and be able to take my notebook from room to room?

You will need a wireless router that you will connect to the cable modem.  Up to 4 computers can connect to the router and cable modem through wired ethernet ports on the router and many more computers will be able to connect through the wireless connection provided by the router.  I recommend routers from Linksys, Belkin, NetGear, or D-Link.

I bought a Linksys Wireless B braodband router, I installed it but am not able to connect to the internet.  Do I have to have some kind of wireless pc card in my notebook?  I also bought a wireless b compact usb adapter.  I can get these things installed but I can't connect to the internet with them.  Did I need the adapter I bought?  This is all new to me.

You do not have a wireless card in your computer unless you ordered it with one.  Note that whenever you change the device connected to your cable modem, you must do a complete reset of the network.  Turn everything off, wiat a few minutes, turn on the cable modem, wait 5 more minutes, then turn on the router (or computer if it is connected directly to the cable modem), then turn on the computers.

If you go to Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet Connections > Network Connections, does your USB wireless adapter or any other wireless network adapter show up there.  If one does, right click on it and select "View available wireless networks".  Does your wireless router network connection show up?  If it does, click on the Connect button and you should be connected wirelessly.

Have your read the user manual that came with your router?
