ICS not working...

Question

Sorry if this is blank when you first read it, I'm new to this kind of stuff. I have a Dimension 2400 desktop with Windows XP For the last 4 months I have been tackling the problem of my Windows Firewall and Wireless Internet not working. I started with the netsh winsock reset, nothing. I found various different places saying to resolve this problem you need to remove certain files from the registry (didn't work so i put them all back in). After further exploring, I found my ICS was not activated. I tried activating it to no success. I have checked and all the dependencies are running. I found that the file svchost.exe-k netsvcs in the System32 folder isn't there. Is that a problem? Should I find a copy of this file and save it to my computer to see if it will work? If anyone needs anymore info, I will do my best to fill it in.

When I click on the icon to launch windows firewall I get the following message: 'Windows firewall settings cannot be displayed because the associated service is not running.Do you want to start the windows firewall/internet connection sharing (ICS) service?' Option Yes/No. If I clicked on 'yes',another message pops up saying: 'Windows cannot start the windows firewall/internet connection sharing (ICS) service.' Okay, so lets start this service. I right click on My Computer/Manage/Services and Applications/Services. Scroll down to Windows firewall/internet connections sharing (ICS)/Properties. Looked at service statue and its stopped, so I assume this needs to be started,so I click on start.However,message: 'Could not start the windows firewall/internet connection sharing (ICS) service on local computer. Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified'

Sounds like it may have gotten deleted for some reason.   try system file checker.   Type  sfc /scannow  in the run box.

Thanks for responding, I did that and everything came up fine. I also looked and saw that several other functions (like Windows Audio) are operating with the same file and are working just fine.

If you haven't already, bring up the task manager and check to see if 'svchost.exe' is indeed running under the processes tab. Then do a search of your c: drive for the file and see where it is located. It should primarily be found in the following locations -   C:\windows\$ntServicePackuninstall$ C:\windows\system32 C:\windows\ServicePackFiles\i386   If you find it any where else, I would get suspicious.   Right click and the file and choose properties. The file should be 14KB in size.   If you have made any changes to your services since you've owned the computer, set them back to thier default start-up, but leave messenger service disabled. Many a time I chased a problem around, only to find it was caused by a few services that were disabled or set to manual.   Let me know what you find.

I did a search of the C Drive and it didn't find the file. If I restore the computer to its factory settings, do you think that would fix the problem? I know it would get rid of everything I have on there, but I backed up most of My Documents to my iPod and should be able to tranfer them easily.

You could do a system restore and that will correct the problem, but I just though of something... When you searched for svchost.exe, did you check 'search system folder' and 'search hidden files and folders' in the advanced options?

Yes I did, and I also reran it just to be sure. I will try restoring the computer to the factory settings and see if that fixes the problem. I'll keep updating. Thanks a lot! Tom
