INSPIRON 6000 (INTERNAL NETWORK CARD) PROBLEMS!!!!!!

I own the XPS M140 and I am happy with (it) mBUT I have a friend with the Inspiron 6000 and I have tried EVRYTHING I can think of to get this thing online!!!!! here is the dilema, when I open my Local Area Connection status window I come up with around 350 packets sent BUT only around 5-10 packets recieved. So..... I grabbed my XPS and it went on fine from the same ethernet with about 400 sent and 390 recieved, so I went to the repair and it still has the same problem and so I then RE installed the network card drivers from the dell website Broadcom 440X 10/100 integrated controller and it still has the same problem. I know that it can send packets to the internet BUT it doesent seem to want to recieve much of anything (oh also I uninstalled norton and turned off my fire wall and still the same problem)   PLEASE!!!!!!! if anyone has any idea on what might be wrong I would be greatly appriciative. Im not sure there is anything left to try.

Sounds like a classic IP setup problem.  You need to look at the PC which works and find out how the ethernet socket is configured.  Is it using automatic config (called DHCP/obtain settings automatically) or are there fixed IP details (IP address, DNS, gateway etc).

If you are using a fixed IP address then get a new one for the new laptop (or just use the same one if you are 100% sure you will never use the two PCs at the same time).  If using DHCP then set the new laptop to DHCP too.  Check whether there is a secondary (alternate) config for the card and again see what the details of this are.

If you have a professional network administrator they will want to know the details of the new PC you are connecting to their network.  It may be that the network is blocking the hardware ID (MAC address) of the new network card, becuase you haven't told the administrator about the new PC.

Hope this is of some help, post to let us know what happens

Er, just realised, are you sure it's a broadcom interface in the i6000?  Could be you have the wrong driver.  Check in the BIOS and in the PC spec...

I am not an expert on the inner workings of computers, but often stumble on fixes. A friend of mine bought a 6000 for her granddaughter. When I saw her last Friday, she was complaining because her wireless capability had dropped out. I tested it on two wireless networks that I could connect my computer to with the same results. Screen said it couldn’t connect to server, yet the computer said it was connected to the wireless network. I looked at every setting I could to try to discover the error, and finally gave up on that method. I did manage to fix it however, and this is what I did.

The computer still would connect using the Ethernet cable. I downloaded Firefox from Mozilla.org, which is an alternative browser to Internet Explorer. When I installed Firefox, the wireless began to work again. Next I restarted Internet Explorer, and it was working again as well. Makes me think there was a problem with Internet Explorer somewhere and installing Firefox corrected the problem.

Good luck.
