Inspiron 1525 wi-fi card replacement

Can anyone tell me if I can simply remove the factory installed Broadcom mini PCI Express wi-fi card and replace it with something else like an Intel half-height card?   I am wondering if the system will have problems detecting the new card and also if there is a way to secure the half-height card, since the documentation shows a full height card in the laptp now?

Thanks.

Thanks for the reply,  I'll have to get back with you later with the model number, since I do not have the laptop with me.    I was hoping to upgrade to something that fully supports 802.11n, not just support for 802.11n (draft).   Also, is there a reason why newer half-height PCI express mini cards won't work?   The Intel 4965 Next-Gen Wireless-N Mini-card is pretty old.

Thanks.

Hi Frank,

May I know the model of the Wireless card you wish to upgrade?

Yes, you can upgrade the wireless card on the computer. Following wireless cards are compatible with Inspiron 1525:

  • Dell Wireless 1390 802.11g Mini-Card
  • Dell Wireless 1490 802.11a/g Mini-Card
  • Dell Wireless 1505 a/b/g/n Mini-Card
  • Intel 3945 WLAN (802.11a/g) Mini-Card
  • Intel 4965 Next-Gen Wireless-N Mini-card

Awaiting your response!

Hi Frank,

Below are the cards which can support 802.11n:

  • Intel® WiFi Link 5100 Wireless-N Half Mini-Card
  • Intel® WiFi Link 5300 Wireless-N Half Mini-Card
  • Intel® WiFi Link 5300 Wireless-N Half Mini-Card

Installing these cards are completely up on users discretion.

Please reply for further questions.

Rajesh,

I ordered an Intel 4965 Next-Gen Wireless-N Mini-card.  The other half mini cards you mentioned were dated as well and would require an adapter to fit properly.   I should mention that the reason I am replacing the card is that I am having connection issues with the wireless functionality.   By this I mean the laptop seems to have to randomly disconnect and reconnect to the access point.   This is observed by the browser not responding and the wireless network connection (system tray) indicating that the radio type is "abng" and then it eventually changes to a radio type of "g", which is correct.   Once the radio type changes to "g", the browser becomes responsive.   This can happen when I haven't moved the laptop and I am 10 feet away from the wireless router.    I am hoping the card replacement fixes the issue.   Do you have any other troubleshooting suggestions?

Thanks.

Frank

Hello,
I refresh the topic. Which of the new N cards will support the Dell Inspiron 1525?
Thank you,
