Inspiron 1545 wont connect to wireless after installing Windows 7?
I recently installed Windows 7 on my Inspiron 1545 labtop. Everything has been working just fine except I cannot connect to the wireless on my university campus. I can connect anywhere else without I problem. So I think my wireless driver must be fine. I already brought it into tech support on my campus (not a good idea). They couldn't fix anything and I've spent the last two days fixing everything they did to my computer. In my adapter settings it says I have a Dell Wireless 1397 WLAN Mini-Card #2 and Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport adapter (Whatever that is). I also run internet explore 8. From searching the web I've seen that I'm not the only one with this problem, but no one seems to know how to fix it. Is there any suggestions how I can get this thing up and running again?

#2 ?? i dont know what that is ..last time is saw that is on desktop computers , when u take a dialup modem card out and put it in another slot .
try reinstalling the drivers for the dell wireless 1397
open device manager .
start - type device . clik on device manager
expand network adapters ,
uninstall the dell wireless 1397 and microsoft virtual wifi miniport adapter .
restart the computer ,
go back to device manager and check if its there or not .
Wireless switch on your inspiron 1545 is "F2" on the keyboard .

Thanks for the advice. I tried that, but it didn't seem to make any difference. Any other suggestions?

I have some more information. I am trying to connect to a WPA2 wireless network. I have seen that there has been a lot of posts about possible incompatiblity between the 1397 mini-card and WPA2. All the advise has been to change the router itself. I do not have that option. The internet is provided by my university. I am happy to take any suggestions. Thank you.

http://ftp.us.dell.com/bios/1545A12.EXE
bios update : the above is applicable for both 32 and 64 bit
Dell quickset : http://ftp.us.dell.com/app/DELL_QUICKSET_A00_R226931.exe
Dell wireless 1397 card drivers : http://ftp.us.dell.com/network/R228532.exe
update the above , and then check if you are able to connect or not .
try using the windows 7 action center to check if it detects any problems .

I had the same problem! Brand new, out of the box 1545 Inspiron with a Dell 1397 wireless adapter and Windows 7 Pro 64 bit OS. It has driven me nuts for the last few weeks. A buddy of mine took the back panel off the laptop and one of the wires to the antennae was disconnected! I am writing this now using the built-in adapter and all is well.
Just a suggestion... check the antennae for a loose wire. I COULD connect if I was within a few feet of the wireless router/access point, but if I walked about 15 feet away, the signal went to near zero.
So much for "Quality Control."
David.
