Inspiron 8000 Format & New install - no network connection & no graphic driver

Hi,

I had to reformat my harddrive and reinstall using my Dell W2K CD.

The installation went without problems. But I have a small low res screen and the driver on the System CD is for AVI when I need nVidia GeForce2 Go. I don't have any such drivers on any CD, only demo software. OK I can download the drivers providing I can connected to the internet again. Thats my other problem.

The Xircom Realport card is installed as are te drivers - no conflicts. I also have an internal Dell TrueMobile card. This is also installed with no conflicts, but is showing no connection.

I can't connect with either connection. The Realport is sending packets but receiving none. I use a USRobotics wireless router, which still works fine with this Dell Inspiron 2500 with external Truemobile card I am using to write this. There is no encryption and the ADSL connection is working ok. Only on my newly installed Inspiron 8000 with WIndows2000 nothings works.

I tried the formatting and fresh unstallation again but the result is the same. DHCP is enabled so I don't need to entrer any IP numbers. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Jim

You probably have the Actiontec combo NIC/modem - use the links below in my sig to get the Actiontec/Intel 8255x Ethernet driver, and the Lucent 8.30 modem driver.  Look in the Internet Explorer - Tools - Internet Options - Connections tab, and set it to never dial a connection.  Then get to a command prompt, type ipconfig /all and yo ushould get IP addresses in the range of the USR router and the gateway should be the address of the router.  First, I would get the chipset driver for your 8000 when you get access.  One should also be on the Drivers cd.

Thanks John,

I have a Xircom Realport combo card (inserted into the pccard slot) and I have the drivers installed from the Xircom CD. When I run ipconfig I get some ip adress that is not set by my router and no gateway address shows. I just get no connection. That is the status shoes packets being sent but none received. And please note, the Wireless card also does not connect. So I think it is rather some common element that needs looking at.

I have also installed the chip set driver off the cd.

You are probably getting a 169.254.x.x type address - a default MS uses when a DHCP server is not present.  You need to figure out why the DHCP IP address server is not being found.
