Inspiron 9400 => Network Driver Problem
I'm having a little trouble with a new Dell inspiron 9400. I just pulled the brand new Inspiron 9400 out of the box two days ago.
When turning it on it automaticly installed itself (as it should). But after windows started forthe first time I found out that the "Ethernet Controller" couldn't find it's driver.
Information:
Dell Inspiron 9400
Processor T2400 1,86 Mhz (Dual Core)
1024 MB 667 Mhz memory (2 x 512MB)
100 GB 7200rpm Harddisk
ATI X1400 256 MB Graphic card
Screen WUXGA (1920x1200)
Windows Professional XP
=> Broadcom ethernet controller =
Problem:
The network driver doesn't work (out of the box. The Ethernet Controller is marked as "? Unknown Hardware"
So I did the following:
-Check the BIOS to see if there is a setting wrong for the Ethernet Controller, but that was good.
-Tried to update the driver with the one in the driver directory (/drivers/network/onboard. But this didn't work
-I downloaded the Broadcom Network drivers from the support site, installed them, but this didn't work
-Then I downloaded the "Broadcom Corporation BCM4401-BO 100Base-TX" from the Broadcom site, installed them, but this didn't work.
-Also tried to roollback the driver, but no driver files where found. (offcourse, cause it's a new notebook, but still :))
-After I tried out every 'Broadcom BCM4401-BO' I recovered the Inspiron by it's recovery option (CTRL+F11)
-When booting again and walking through the installation/configuration, the Ethernet Controller was still "? Unknown Hardware"
-I ran every update on the Microsoft site (sometimes that helps)
-Now the Ethernet Controller is located under 'Network Devices' in the 'Device manager' But still marked with => ?
-I tried all the driver updates in the sequence I mensioned before, but still the same problem
-Then I called Dell and asked for support, they offcourse tried to help me
-They are sending me the Driver CD's/Software CD's/Recovery CD's, cause they think that the software on the Dell partition contains the wrong drivers
-They also think that the driver that is posted on the Support download site is corrupt/outdated
-So I'm waiting for the CD's
Now here is the question:
Next to the Service request I made at Dell I wanted to know from you guys, if you know something that I can try?!
Cause I don't think it's the Dell partition, cause I downloaded the drivers from dell, but also they original Broadcom drivers from Broadcom itself and they don't work.
I still think the hardware (as in Ethernet Controller) isn't broken, cause it show's up in the device manager.
The wireless works fine, and I hooked up a USB->Ethernet adapter and that works fine asswell
So help me out here.......cause I gotta brand new 9400, but I can't use it yet for my ICT work.

you said your ati x1400 is 256MB, can u please confirm that by looking into system info by hitting F2 at bootup.
i just got my brand new 9400 a few days ago.
my confirmed order and invoice both say my ati x1400 has 256MB, but when i did an F2 at bootup, i saw under System, under Device Info, that video memory is only 128MB. comments from anyone please. thanks.

But they wanted to; send me another driver, they sended me cd's, they wanted me to reinstall the whole system for the fourth time.
I got a little angry, cause when you take the lowest support that you can get, they pick it up and return it within 5 business days.
When calling Dell for 5 business days, they could have easily picked it up and returned.
But saying what I had to say with a irritation in my voice.....they decided to pick it up, and send me a new one!
So problem solved (I hope:))
Greetz
P.S. When I get the new one I will check the MB's of the Ati when I get it
