Internal Modem
I'm looking into getting a new laptop and was told that they no longer come with internal modems and that I would have to buy an external modem. Can anyone tell me why this is? I can only get dial up where I live therefore it's easier for me to just plug the phone cord into the back of my laptop. How would I go about getting an internal modem for my new laptop? Or is there any laptops that come with the internal modem already installed.

I have not researched this and am speaking "at the moment". I know the new Dell E6400 has a modem, or should I say you can get a modem. All the ones we are getting at work for clients do not have the internal modem card installed. I do not know what other companies or other Dell models have in the way of modems. One note the new notebooks may not have PCMCIA card slots. The Dell E6400 does not have a pcmcia card slot. I think modems may be around for awhile, maybe not standard anymore though. It may be like floppies in new desktop,. The floppy controller is on the mainboard, turned off in the bios, you have to buy the floppy drive and cable , no longer standard hardware.

I doubt there's a single [new] laptop currently available - including the most basic models, which isn't able to connect to the internet straight out of the box?

..that is not the issue, it is whether or not they have a modem
