Internet Connection Intermittent - 3Com Modem + XP Pro

I have an Dimension 4100 running XP Professional with a 3Com Controller Based Modem.  Ever since I upgraded to XP,  I've noticed that when I connect to the net, everything will be fine until out of the blue, I won't be able to receive data. I can see the icon in the bottom toolbar showing that the computer is attempting to send data, but nothing comes back.

Then, either after about a minute or two, the data starts coming in, or it will stay this way forcing me to hang up and redial (which seems to get me back up and running again).

Two other PCs that connect to the same phone line don't exhibit this problem  I have checked the wiring, enabled and disabled the firewall, run virus scans and Ad-Aware scans, reset Internet Explorer to default settings, set the modem to slower speed, but nothing seems to identify/correct the problem.

I can't seem to understand why this is happening and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Could be driver or upgrade.  Remove the old modem driver and reload new WXP driver.  What is the model number of the modem?

And avoid UPGRADE!  It's always best to clean install Windows.

The Modem is a Dell p/n 19YRD, V.90, internal, controller, Data/Fax/Voice modem which is a US Robotics 56K Model 0727 Product 3CP3298-DEL.  The driver is a Microsoft XP, 4/19/2001, version 5.1.2462.1,  US Robotics PCI Voice Modem.  Neither Dell nor US Robotics have specific XP drivers for this modem.

The modem worked fine using the Win ME drivers.

I haven't come across a USR hardware based modem that will not run with WXP.  W2K and WXP share the same driver.  Remove all modem drivers from Device Manager and reload the modem driver.  Try Microsoft's Dial Up Networking.  If problem persists, then you may want to wipe the HD and clean install WXP.

Also reseat the modem.  If possible, try the modem on another WXP PC.
