Wow. I am sorry i do nnot have the answer but I just have to tell you I have the exact same problem. I also have a cable modem and called my ISP as well. I like you think it is not them since my modem is working fine. If you get an answer, can you please send it to me. My PC started doing this today. I cleaned up spyware last night and deleted about 700 files. I am afraid this is fallout.

My e-mail is mjkoval@knology.net.

Thanks and good luck with yours.

Nick,

As Mary Jeanne suggested, one of the commonest causes of symptoms like this is spyware/malware. Download, install, update and run Ad-Aware and Spybot as described in the second link listed below. If you continue to experience problems, the next step is to download HijackThis, install it as described in the second link below, and submit a log to the good folks in the Virus Information and Removal board for review.

I was having a similar problem.  Do as JimW said.

In my case, it was a hidden system file called aw3api.dll in the windows/system32 directory.  Best as I can tell, it is tied to the vx2.betterinternet mess.  Adaware did not pick up that file, perhaps because of its HSR attributes, and it was being loaded as part of the winlogon process.

Problem fixed!!!  I had a worm called Netsky or something like that.  I used a cleaner from

http://www.avast.com/i_idt_171.html  it worked perfectly.  Try this and see how many files are infected.  It scared me!!!

Good luck,

Nick

I ran the check and sure enough it did find some files with win32:Netsky-p. This is amazing since I run Norton, have Win firewall and Hacker Smacker running. In any case, I still have the dis-connect problem. Someone suggested software that fixes internet related problems - Something like internetfix. I have to go find the name again. It scares me, since I saw a post where the person said it made things worse. I don't know what else to do. My internet loses it connection if it is idle even for a short period of time.

If anyone else has any suggestions please help. This is bad.

Thank you.
