Is there a checklist for wifi issues?
Hi,
I'm new here but I've read many, many posts in this group (and hoping Rick is still here) because I've learned so much from him, and others,
Current problem with Dell XPS 14z wireless connectivity, i have the laptop since January 2012 and all was well until January 2013. Problems started acting after christmas and now I regularly get dropped from the network. And now, my 8Meg broadband service often only gives me 0.1 downloads. I suspect, because some new router/AP device in the area is interfering with mine (which is a zyxel modem, supplied by Irish national telecoms provider, Eircom.)
i have done speedtest around the house and when it fails in the sitting room (less than 20 feet from modem), I tend to get better results in the hall (10 incehs from modem).
When I view available devices, one or two others get consistently better strength than mine -- not sure if this is the brand of mod
So, my question is, is there a checklist of things I can go through to hone in on the problem?

Miriam,
Can you run Finding System Information REMOVE YOUR PRODUCT ID and REGISTERED OWNER and post the information back here.
Can you also run Network Interface and post the results here.

Miriam,
Did you recently install the operating system on March 18th, 2013 or was the system new?
Is there a reason you're using WEP Security, wich can be hacked in less than 10 minutes? Make and model of your wireless router, please.

The easiest method is Restoring Your Computer´s Software to the Factory Settings
Unless you made the Windows 7 - IMPORTANT Windows 7 Backup Disks to create then you can use Restoring Your Dell Computer to Original Factory Installation with Dell DataSafe Local Backup 2.0
If you used an Operating system disk to reinstall, the drivers need installed in the correct order. How to Download and Install Drivers in the Correct Order
I would work on the wireless router, first. How to login to your wireless router and use these Recommended Wireless Router Settings I use channel 11. I would make a new SSID to make connecting easier.
Here is the same information with pictures. Setting up/Troubleshooting a Wireless Network You'll probably have to go to the lines.

Thanks for your help.
Yes, the OS was recently reinstalled with the intention of restoring default settings and in the hope it would rectify network problems. But, no luck!
The router is labelled by the network provider (Eircom) and it is a ZyXEL communications corporation.
i don't know why i'm using WEP.

Hi Rick
I just want to give you some feedback on this problem I was having with wifi on XPS 14z that you very kindly provided help and advice to me a while ago.
it took me several weeks to work through the testing: including trying different channels and installing the windows system again. I also got a new router in that time. But nothing fixed the problem abd the wifi continued to drop frequently.
As another test, I purchased a small usb wifi adaptor (for ten pounds in London's Heathrow airport) and to my delight it has fixed the problem and I have had 100 percent uptime since its installation 2 weeks ago. The downside is it occupies one of the two usb ports on the laptop.
But, it's all working and I want to thank you again for your help and I learned a good deal from you.
