Local Area Connection

HI

I Recently purchased a Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop with Windows Vista.  It works reasonably well but I have a serious problem.  Whereas my daughter can connect to the internet via an ethernet cord my laptop tells me  that A CABLE IS NOT PLUGGED TO THE NETWORK ADAPTER "LOCAL AREA CONNECTION".

I conect to the internet using a Netopia router which is Cayman 3341 (provided by my ISP) which allows me the choice of connecting with either usb or ethernet.  This connects from a  telephone line.  I have a laptop and my daughter also has on and we also have a desktop so I  have tried to connect usingn wireless via an Ativa router which caters for 4 wired computers and  also a wireless.  I connect it  from the cayman.  The problem is that the usb connection (I can only  connect one  laptop via usb) and then when i try to go wireless the connection is either limited or it is intermittent just breakign off and on and the wired computer does the same thing.

I have tried to uninstall and reinstall the driver for the Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller and the same problem occurs. I would be grateful for any  suggestions or help.

Thanks

Celina

I think you have a very simple problme but I need to get some facts from you.  wih just one of the machine connected to the modem, please post the results of an ipconfig /all.

To do this go to a command prompt and type  "ipconfig /all >> C:\ipconfig.txt"  (without the quotes).  Now go to your C drive, find the file you just created and copy/paste the results here.

(Start>Run>cmd>hit enter)

I need to confirm if the modem is also a router.  From what you ahev posted, it does not sound as though it is.

Okay.  All of that looks good.  The reason you cannot use both an ethernet and USB connection because the main device (the router) can only output one signal.

You can either purchase a simpel 4 port switch and connect this via ethernet to the modem/router or a wireless router and thur some special configuration use it in conjunction with the exisiting router/modem.

Yes, a similar output form the laptop would be nice also.
