Lost network connection...
Hi. I have a Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router at my computer and a Linksys Wireless-G 2.4 ghz USB Adapter connected to my wife's computer which is in an adjacent room (we're both using WinXP
Home). We've had this setup for over a year now with no major problems.
Today when she logged on, the little network icon on the Taskbar suddenly displayed a red x, with the message: Wireless Network Connection- Not connected. My Internet connection is working fine
and the usual lights are lit on my router. I verified her adapter was firmly connected, then double-clicked the network icon and in the Wireless Network Connection window it said: "No wireless networks were found in range."
I clicked "Refresh Network List" and an item labelled "Unsecured wireless network" appeared with a numerical name beginning with "05B403..." and an option to connect.
When I set up my network I entered a name for it and "05B403..." was not it. Something strange seems to be going on and I'd appreciate any advice.

First, has your wife inadvertantly turned off the wireless network card? On many laptops the Fn F2 key combination toggles the wireless card on and off.
The unsecured network that you found is probably a neigbor's network. Does your network still show up in the available wireless networks?

Hi Steve. How does one turn off/on the wireless network card? One of the messages I saw said "make sure the wireless switch on your computer is on". I'm not familiar with a 'wireless switch'.
BTW, her computer is a desktop. Under Wireless Networks the one I set up displays as 'automatic'. I moved it up to first on the list but still no connection.

Well, everything was working fine this morning. I spent hours last night trying different things and finally just shut down. This morning the connection was functioning well. I have no idea what happened but I thank you all for your help.

Long time no see! How's retirement?
Need me to call a Kahuna to bless your computer setup? Or send some Ti-Leaves to ward off the evil Microsoft spirits? ;)
I see you finally changed from Dial-up to Broadband… and wireless yet!
Usually, when you read about someone not connecting one night and no problems connecting in the morning... it usually turns out where two computers are competing for the same wireless IP connection or something to that effect... or the Router for some reason needed to be reset/rebooted.
If your neighbor has just setup his wireless access and using the default settings... and if you're using your routers default SSID... that might be the same as your neighbors SSID... you may experience the same when he goes online, again.
Have you used a unique SSID (something like "MccDaddy") and secured the wireless connection with a WEP or WPA key? If you haven't yet... you should password protect your Router configuration access, also.
Check your Wireless Router's log to see if you can get more info on what's happening.

My apologies for not responding to your post. After the original problem was resolved I never returned to the thread so I had no idea you had posted.
Re: retirement, it still amazes me that I can remain so busy day in and day out and not have a job to go to. I can't imagine how I got anything else done while working 8-10 hours a day.
I've been on broadband a couple of years and I now understand the concept of the Information Superhighway. The wealth of knowledge at my fingertips, instantly... how on Earth did we function without it?

I know what you mean! Although your situation might be different from mine... since being on disability, I've found a new speed in my gearbox called compound low! ;) Things that used to take 30 minutes, now take 2-4 hours. Doesn't help me any... that my wife "Some How", Always, finds things for me to do! :o
Yeah... just about everything you'd want to know/learn is on the Internet. It also brings the States/Countries/boundaries of the world closer together... so you sort of meet people you'd otherwise never mention a word to. It's great! Sometimes, my son even goes online to check the traffic cameras... to decide what route to take. I agree with you, "how on Earth did we function without it"?
Other than the fact my wife's having one of her annual cleaning fits (which always means I'm in on the fun ;)) in preparation for that Ba-Humbug time of the year (lol)... all is as well as it can be, I guess.
