MSSQL Server Service Manager problem

I have Microsoft SQL Server Service Manager ( vers. 8.00.760) installed, but it takes almost 2 minutes for the server to start, even though it is set to auto start service when OS starts. The monitor in the taskbar stays red and can't be manually started. The MSSQL server and MSSQL server adhelper are both set to auto. Any ideas as to what I can do to resolve the slow start up? Also trying to do anything manually to the server while service is not running seems to be causing computer to do odd things such as freezing up.

Dim.4300- XP HOME- no service packs installed ( tried with SP1A and without, same reults)
