Make sure the wireless switch on your computer is on...
Hello all,
I have a Dell XPS M140 running with Windows Media Center XP.
When I first bought my Dell my wireless would be able to pick up public wireless connections. I never used them however, working on dial up (yep)
A friend of mine wanted me to go to her house and suggested we hook up to her cable modem. I tried to install the software for the cable modem. It didn't work. I used the dial-up.
Since then, I could never use my wireless again. I am using DSL from Netzero and have no problems.
But I'm going of out town next week and need to have my wireless up and running to use at Starbucks and at my friend's public site.
Everything seems to be working except when I try to do a test to find wireless networks within range, I bet the following message:
"No wireless networks were found in range. Make sure the wireless switch on your computer is on"
I can't find anything about this switch. Not in the control panel, not in the properties. I search the help and can't find anything.
HELP! I really need to get my wireless going by Monday. I may even try calling Dell tonight.
Thanks
Donna Z.

When you installed the software (whihc is not needed), it probably chnaged your configuations to amke the cable modem the default connection and/or never dial a connection.
Control Panle>Internet Options> Connections Tab See what is enabled/disabled there.

The only other place that device could be disabled is in the BIOS.
Make sure it has been installed by checking the Device Manager for any ! (Yellow Exclamations)

Hey Jim,
Thanks for replying. I went to my control panel and checked the connections. The only things there are my Netzero DSL and Dial up connections and the AT&T communicator I need to get into my computer at work with.
I don't think that's the place because if I try to set up a new connection and click to see if wireless is in the range, then it still says the switch needs to be turned on.
:smileysad:
Thanks
Donna

I do not own an XPS but have had 3 Inspirons. For my Insprion B130, I was able to turn my wireless on and off using the FN key and the F2 key which had the picture of a tower on it.
Both my Inspiron 1521 and 1525 have a physical switch on either the left and right sides respectively. You just slide the switch over to either turn the wireless on or off.
Hope this helps. If not, you should try consulting your manual to see where this switch might be located on your pc.
