Media state disconnected and can't connect to the internet

I can't connect to the internet using the hard connection or wireless connection. Windows 7, Dell Studio laptop. Both lights are yellow on my NIC card.

NOTE: I am only moderately technical - I just read these instructions on the internet and don't really know what I'm doing. I figure there's something wrong with drivers, but am not sure.

Here's what I've tried so far:

Looked in Device Manager and nothing had yellow exclamation points. Also restarted some LAN looking services in component services in administrative tools.

I tried the IP renew on the CMD line and lots of things say "Media disconnected" including my Wireless LAN adapter, Ethernet adapter local area connection 2, ethernet adapter bluetooth network connection, and 6 tunnel adapters.

I tried ipconfig and the IP configuration doesn't have a dns suffix, the ethernet adapter local area connection doesn't have a default gateway, the wireless lan adapter has information, the tunnel adapter teredo tunneling pseudo-interface has information, but everything else says "media disconnected".

Then I did flushdns and it successfully flushed the dns resolver cache.

then I did showclassid local and it said "the operation failed as no adapter is in the state permissible for this operation".

I'm at a loss, except for reinstalling windows, which i am hoping i don't have to do.

does anyone have the magic answer?

TIA

Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt:

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ip reset reset.log

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reboot the machine.

ggrrl,

Using Internet Explorer, go and download Intel(R) WiFi Link 6200 drivers and save them to the desktop.

Start, control panel, device manager, network, 6200 adapter. Right clicked on it, then left clicked uninstall. It asks you if you want to remove and associated software with it. I clicked yes. When it was done, I restarted the computer.

Install the drivers you just downloaded. It will install everything for the 6200 AGN adapter.

Wow, you're fast.  Thanks.  I had found it elsewhere on the site using another computer and saved to a flash drive.  It's loaded on the offending laptop.  But when I go to uninstall the file in control panel, I can't find the old version of the file.  Can I just install the new version?

Great posts, and exactly my problem with mother-in-laws computer.  Simple question -- how can I get anything from Internet Explorer when I can't get on the internet either wired or wireless?

August 23rd, 2012 17:00

Argh.  And I just checked on another computer, and the link in your post above no goes to an error page 'Sorry, the details for this driver are currently not available...'

tpoliceshop,

Sorry for the delay, work.

You cn try installing it on top of what is there but  prefer doing it this way.

Make sure you have the new drivers package saved to your desktop.

Make a system restore point.

Start, control panel, device manager, network, right click on your adapter, left click uninstal. Tell it to remove the drivers and software.

Restart your computer.

When you log back in, the new gardware wizard will try to install the adapters drivers. You can try them and see how they work, or double click on the drivers from the desktop and install the new drivers.

Check in the device manager to make sure the adapter installed properly.

Hi,

I have tried all of the suggestions here but still can't get the wireless to work.  It may connect for a few seconds and then fails.  It keeps showing a low wireless message.  Other laptops can connect to the network with no problem.  It doesn't work in Safe Mode with Networking either.  How can I know if this is a hardware problem rather than software?

Thank you for any suggestions!

Grace

Will this work with the same error on Windows 8?

I have the media disconnected errors when I type the ip config in the command, shows ethernet, blue tooth, wireless, etc. disconnected.

Thanks
