Modem Installation

Question

I have a Dell Dimension XPS T 750r with a factory installed 3com/US Robotics V.90 voice modem.  I have downloaded the updated drivers and received all of the instructions on installing the drivers from the original disk as well.  I did this once before with the updated drivers and it crashed my computer so I perfer to use the factory installed drivers. I reinstalled windows 98 yesterday and could not find the drivers on either the 3Com/US Robotics disk, the Dell Product Recovery disk, or the Dell Resource CD.   I don't understand that.  Can anyone explain why my system cannot find the drivers? Just two more questions.   When I start the computer the new hardware found window pops up looking for  - PCI serial controller.    I believe this is the modem.   Is this correct? I also have a document that I printed from the computer from the Dell help system on the computer.  It says: After a reinstall of Window 95/98, the modem may not always be detected correctly.  When you go to START|SETTINGS|CONTROL PANEL|SYSTEM|DEVISE MANAGER, the Modem may not be under a category of Modems, but under 'Other Devices'. When I go to Device Manager, I do not see either category.   I also get a message that no modem is found.   That seems strange to me because of the new hardware found window launching.   Is this because the drivers for the modem have not been installed? Thank you for any help.  This is a four year old computer but is in excellent condition.  When I first reinstalled windows in the spring of 2000, it took the Dell technician 4 hours to help me get the modem installed properly. Why does the modem have to be so difficult when everything else goes so well? Thank You in advance for any assistance and support you can provide. Big Brother,

Thank you for the information. I now have the modem installed and working with one minor issue to resolve.

There was no "other" category to select in Device Manager so I installed the drivers under "Modem". However, I still get 'New Hardware Found' for Serial Port Controller. I click cancel and it goes away but if it is installed correctly and the system is recognizing and using the modem, why do I still get the message to intall the modem again?

Ed Lumbert,

You may have successfully installed a modem driver, however it may not be installed correctly or previous attempts to install the driver have left "ghosts" in device manager. Restart the system in safe mode, and check in device manager for all references to modem. Remove them from safe mode device manager. Then check under "Sound, Video and Game Controllers" for something called a "wave device for voice modem" Remove that as well. Restart and cancel the new hardware wizard for the modem. Run wmregdel.exe from the driver CD that you have or from the Windows 98 CD. Restart again and install the modem driver.
