Modem OptiPlex

I need to get a Modem for my OptiPlex, think its a 620 or 640 series, dont have the info right in front of me. I heard a controller based modem is better. Looking at the ones available thru dell and thru Newegg. How do you tell if it is controller based or non-controller based? Any recommendations for a good modem is appreciated. Thanks
