Both the new Supramax and the other modems would be v.90/v.92 modems. That means that they both are rated to connect at link rates of *up to* 56,000 bits per second. On US phone lines, maximum speed is limited to 53,333 bits per second due to crosstalk considerations.

To obtain a speed of 53,333 bps requires an almost perfect phone line and a very short run to the telco switch. Very few people enjoy dialup speeds this fast. More typical connect rates are between 44,000 bps and 50,666 bps.

Factors that affect the initial connect rate include: Line noise, line frequency response, other telco line impairmens, distance to telco switch, remote (host) modem, and last but not least, compatability of a given modem to the existing line conditions and interoperability with the host modem.

Bottom line is that the new Supra may connect as high as 53,333, but may also connect at a more typical 48,000 or even slower. If you happen to have line conditions that the Supra is not good at handling, it may even fall back to v.34 and connect at 26400. You won't know until you try.
