Ok, try here but you will need the number off the modem to find a driver.

Have you gone to 3com's site and looked for a driver? You can use their driver if you want to. I have drivers for that modem other than don't understand the hawk modem mention? You have 2 modems in this computer? Maybe I lost touch with modems!

Thanks for reply. I had an early problem with the computer modem and Dell provided in house service. This is the modem driver found on the disc.

E:\Drivers\Win9x

a4hawk9x

3Com Modem drivers for the U.S. Robotics 56K Voice PCI (Hawk) Modem.

Version A04 for Windows 9x

Information and Installation Instructions

---------------------------------------------------

The disc is a Dell Driver and Utilities for reinstalling V.90 PCI controller based data/fax/voice modem for windows, which was used by the Dell service tech and left with me.

Includes .inf files for 3CP3298-DEL

(19YRD)

I found the 3298 on the U.S. Robotics web site but it appears to be the same as the one I have. Also I searched the Dell web site and could not find anything newer then the 1999 version I now have.

Yep, admittedly I am a bit confused by the numbers and do not really now what to look for.

Let me make sure I am on track here. You are running windows 98? If not can you tell me the OS you have? If your drivers go that far back you might need a firmware (flash the modem) to get it up to par. But Walmart sells 3 com modems rather cheap and and if it were me I would consider uninstalling that modem completely and going to Walmart and get a new modem with all new drivers. You have several selections for PCI modems and some are software driven like the winmodem and others are hardware based, the best because it does not drain power off the CPU. But if you rather maybe I can help look if you give more information like all the numbers off this modem.

I am using w98se. I’ve flashed things before but never a modem and no idea as to where to find the info I think it is on the modem disc? Or is it on the Dell web site? If you could point me in the proper direction I would like to give it a try, as it would be good to learn. I could not hurt anything, as I will probably just pick up a new modem from Wal-Mart tomorrow anyhow. A new inexpensive 3 Com modem would be the easy and the best route to take. I’ll check tomorrow 25th and see what I find and post back.

The only numbers on the PCI modem are:

Product 3CP3298-DEL

DPN/ 019YRD

I do have a hand written note on file indicating US Robotics; model 0637, DPN 0002513E but I do not remember where I got this information.

So far I cannot find anything on the XPS T500. I am not the best around to find the older stuff. But the flash of the modem might not be available on the Dell site anyway and probably would be a 3com offer. But truth is if you get a newer modem and especially a hardware based modem you will have better speeds. I noticed Walmart had a couple options on PCI modems and whatever you choose read the box to be sure it works for 98 SE also. Some are XP only if I remember correctly. In the long run you will be better off getting a V.90/V.92 modem. Should work much better for you rather than working so hard to get this old one working. I will still look around for drivers but you may have no choice. Just be sure if you get a new one to unistall the old modem and make sure before you pull it there are no modems showing in device manager. Then put the new one in and when you boot windows should find it. Try to get it on Irq2, 3, or 4. It usually will take irq3 in most cases.

Sounds like you got some good help and or advice off the other board. That's good news. I was at Walmart here today and was thinking about your post so stopped by and saw several internal PCI 3com modems for windows and compatible with win98 and for $24. Strange they had none at your store. You might have this problem with another ISP as they are all going v.92 or yes, DSL or broadband. Great it is working though and I will read the article.

I have not used this forum for a couple of years and I notice that Dell has made considerable changes to their search support. I had difficulty finding anything of relevance but I assume this is because of the growing complexity in product lines.

I also posted this on a newsgroup and I got a reply that explains the problem from MS don’t know if this is kosher but here is the address: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/280375

Unbelievably, today the computer is connecting perfectly. Outlook Express is even noticeably faster. I did go to Wal-Mart and they had one an external fax modem. Tried Best Buy and they had one PCI modem for $45. Everything is DSL now.

I am going to search for a new ISP and if my computer acts up again I will try the above KB info or just go to a new server. Should you happen across flash info or drivers please post it here and I will be notified. Thank you for your patience and support.
