Motorola SM56 PCI Fax Modem in XPS GEN3

I tried to search the forum for an answer for this but I could not. I recently purchased an XPS GEN 3 without a modem. Now I need fax capability so I purchased a CompUSA V.92 data/fax modem (which in actuality the Morotola SM56 PCI card), and after installation (that went fine), the modem fails diagnostics (could not communicate w/modem). So I'm guessing the native Motorola drivers are incompatible with the Dell Chipset..

Any suggestions on getting this modem to work on the GEN3? Thanks in advance..

jfalkl,

If the modem fails diagnostics because Windows could not communicate with the modem, then there is most likely either a problem with the modem or with the modem driver software.  Dell has used the Motorola SM56 modem in other Dell computer systems, and Dell uses Intel 800 series chipsets on their motherboards, so the modem will be compatible with the Dell chipset.

Thanks Steve, I thought it was the modem failing as well, however I exchanged it for another brand new one from another store and had the same problem.. I'll keep looking

jfalkl,

If you had the same problem with another modem, then the problem is most likely within windows.  You may need to remove and reinstall the communications portions of Windows to fix this.
