NIC Failure at boot after installing USB Modem drivers.

Question

Long story short, my father in-law had problems with his cable modem connection. Rather the waiting for me to assist, call provider which had him install the modem USB drivers in order to attempt to make connection via his USB port. When this worked, tech deemed problem fixed. A few days later, I attempted to revert back to using the onboard NIC to see what was the original problem. I de-installed the USB drivers and attempted to install the NIC using plug and play. When the system didn't see the NIC, I then attempted to install manually. Nether worked. System can't see NIC and when I attempt to install manually, it come up with an error 10. Also, at bootup, I noticed that a message flashes on the screen that says 'NIC Failure'. Forgot to mention, I did go into bios and enable Network Controller after de-installing the USB Modem Drivers.Thinking that the NIC may indeed be bad, I attempted to install a second NIC in an open PCI port. Again, this NIC had the same problem. Plug and Play doesn't see it and when I install it manually it comes up with an error 10.I would appreciate any advice and/or assistance resolving this problem.Thanks in advance!!!!!

I am having the same error message . It appeared out of nowhere for sometime now and I have no clue why. I have a Dell Demension 8100. The NIC opening in the back is a light yellow color light if that means anything.   Did you get an reply to this problem?

Yes.  My problem turned out a modem that was hosing up the PCI bus.  I pulled all but the Graphics card and began to reseat one at a time.  Found that when the modem was installed, the audio nor network device would work.  Pulled it and it's been happy ever since.  Hope it helps.   Good luck.
