Netgear Setup Problem

Howdy -

I have a Netgear 54Mbps router (WGR614 -updated) which was working just fine with Earthlink DSL.  Today I switched from EL to SBC/Yahoo.  No problems when connected directly from modem to computer, but put the router into the mix and I get no internet connection.  SBC claims problem is within router.  I have tried everything I can think of with the router (auto IP, etc).  Any one have ANY suggestions??

V from CA,

Did you look over the information in the SBC DSL FAQ at DSLReports I'd posted in another thread you began a week or so ago?

What is the exact model of the DSL modem you received from SBC? Some of their modems include router functionality, including PPPoE login. Several are discussed in the DSL FAQ.

Did you reset the modem and the router when you switch the device connected to the router.  This is essential.  You need to shut down the modem, the router and the computers.  Wait a few minutes.  Power up the modem.  Wait about 5 minutes then power up the router and finally the computers.

I looked over the sight that Steve mentioned a couple of weeks ago.  I have also gone through a lot of the 'troubleshooting' suggestions.  I am tired of this thing at the moment.  I will look over Jim's suggestions more carefully and get back to you.  Thanks.  --V

OK...I did exactly what Steve said and it did not work.  Next I went to the website you suggested, Jim.  Here is what I found:

Q: Why doesn't my Router work with the 5100B (#9379)
  • A: Routers with the default IP of 192.168.0.1 (example Netgear) conflict with the 5100B default of 192.168.0.1. The router has to be changed, since the 5100B's cannot be changed.

A-HA !  This is the problem!  So...How do I change the router?  Somewhere in settings, yes - but how do I configure it?  --V

V,

Cademetz's suggestion will work. It's the "Double NAT" method described in this note at DSL Reports.

You will need to connect to the router without the router being connected to the modem. Open a browser window and goto http://192.168.0.1. This should bring up the web-based administration interface. Look for a tab/page to setup the "LAN IP". You should see a page which has the LAN IP as 192.168.0.1. I would recommend changing this to 192.168.1.1. Save the settings. With this change, you will need to reconnect to the router as the sub-net has changed. With this change, you should be good to go.

I don't know much about Netgear products, but if you do use the double NAT you MIGHT run into problems with some services. For example, connecting to XBox Live may not work and other similar things do not like running through double NATs. Just an FYI.

Cademetz,

I agree. Two routers connected serially, both doing NAT, can lead to strange problems. But it's the easiest change to make. If it works, then we should step back and see whether there are any problems that could be resolved by putting the 5100B into bridge mode, and doing the PPPoE authentication on the Netgear instead.

OK...Here's the scoop:  (For anyone else who has this problem.)

1.  Steve suggested this website: http://www.dslreports.com/faq/sbc.  Found problem!

2.  Next stop: Netgear Support:  http://kbserver.netgear.com/kb_web_files/n101306.asp

The SBC DSL modem SpeedStream 5100b, used on new DSL and Yahoo SBC DSL installations since Feb. 2004, causes the NETGEAR router Setup Wizards to fail, and prevents routers from connecting to the Internet. This problem affects many router brands.

The modem can be distinguished from the earlier 5100 by a 5th light labeled "Internet".

The SpeedStream 5100b's default configuration is "PPPoE on the Modem" — matching a built-in PPPoE client convenience feature that sends login ID and password to SBC.

To Work Around These Issues, Configure the Modem for Bridged Mode

3.  Follow the directions (if you can - it took me awhile!)

4.  Voila!  Success!

Thanks guys - hope this helps someone else!  --V

V,

That's excellent news! Putting the 5100b in "bridge mode" is the preferred way to set it up for use with another router...that is, make the 5100b not be a router! :smileyvery-happy:

(edit) P.S.: It seems that Netgear is very familiar with the problem!
