Network Adapters removed when I tried to uninstall AVG Internet Suite
Hi All,
I installed AVG Internet Suite on my Inspiron 9200 last month. Was having problems with it and since AVG's tech's couldn't figure out why they suggested uninstalling and re-installing. I tried and it wouldn't uninstall completely but it did manage to remove my Network Adapters. Intel PROSet/WIreless 2200BG, Broadcom 440 10/100, and I'm not sure about the 1394 Net Adapter (sorry, don't remember). I finally managed to get them back with Windows XP's System Restore. It seems AVG digs in deep and installs it's own mini-ports so when uninstalled, it takes it all. The latest from AVG is I need to download and backup all of the drivers for my network adapters so I can uninstall AVG and then re-install it so it will work properly. I am hoping someone here can help me with that. I bought my computer in Feb.2005 and it's no longer under warranty. I need to newest drivers and software that will work for my Network Adapters. I went to a link that was posted for someone else's PROSet Wireless problem and there were so many that I thought I better not try it on my own. Thanks for the help in advance.

macaw75,
There have been issues with AVG, lately, so maybe using a system restore point to when this worked would be the easiest way to get your connection back.
Do you have the XP disks?

Hi Rick,
Unfortunately there have been some minor issues with AVG since I downloaded it. That's why AVG tech's wanted me to uninstall and reinstall it. They are still trying to come up with a fix since I don't dare try to uninstall again unless I have what I need to fix the network adapters ahead of time. Just the uninstall will be difficult but that's a whole other can of worms. The problem with System Restore is it also brings back more of AVG. Then when I try to uninstall again, it does the same thing (loose the network adapters).
Yes, I have the original XP disk that came from Dell with my laptop. I was told that if I ever had to use it, then it would put my laptop back to it's original, fresh from the factory condition. For that reason, I also have an external hard drive and using Paragon Hard Disk Manager, made a backup (mirror) of the system. Unfortunately, I don't have the know how to find (on my computer) and backup just the software and drivers I already have, and would need to restore the network adapters. That's why I'm wanting to download them. So, if you have any other possible suggestions for the non-geek, I am all ears (or eyes in this case). Thanks.

macaw75,
Depending on the version of AVG you have, you can try posting in the DELL Malware Removal Forum and ask them how to remove AVG.
An XP repair would be my first choice.
Insert the operating system disk and restart your computer.
Press any key to boot from CD.
Choose install.
Do the agreement.
Now choose repair. Leave the disk in until you see the Welcome Screen. Takes about 35 minutes. You'll then have to get all the Windows Updates.
Other procedures, but only after making backup copies of files and folders that you cannot afford to lose. This should be a normal procedure.

HI Rick,
I do have information on the steps I'll need to take to completely uninstall AVG, but I will try the Dell Malware Forum and see if they might have an idea for an easier way to do it.
Using the XP disk is the last thing I want to do. Getting all of the Windows updates for the past 5 years alone would take a long time, not to mention everything else.
For now, I just need to find out what version/date of drivers and software for my Network Adapters would have been used on my Inspiron 9200 with an approximate purchase date of Feb. 2005. It's the easiest possible solution to download/save them as a backup on an external drive, then after uninstalling AVG, I can use them to fix my network adapters.
Thanks for your help

macaw75,
I know they know some of the registry entires to remove to complete the uninstall process.
Your drivers disk should have the origional working drivers or they can be downloaded at Drivers & Downloads just do not use the Dell Download Manager. How to by-pass the Dell Download Manager

Rick,
Thanks, It will be helpful to know all of the registry entries that are usually left behind and need to be removed. On another community site, several people had the same problem and used Revo Uninstaller to get what was left behind when they tried to uninstall AVG. This way I can double check to make sure it is all gone.
I never received a drivers disk when I bought my Inspiron 9200. I only got the Dell XP disk, one for Power DVD, one for Word Perfect, and one for Sonic Record Now. I wish I had known I was supposed to get a drivers disk. I would have had Dell send to me, but it's too late now.
I have gone to Drivers and Downloads but there are so many versions I don't know which one to get. It took me to version 12.4.4 with a release date of 2/5/2010. My current version (obviously updated) is 9.0.4.39 with a release date of 12/19/2007. I don't know how new of a version I can use, or if I have to start with the version that originally came with my laptop, then update from there. And then there is the software (if it ends up that I need it). I'm not sure which one I should use. There is also a general version on Intel's website but they say that I may need to use Dells because Dell may have changed it. These are the things I need more information about,
Thanks

macaw75,
As I said before, the people at DELL Malware Removal Forum will help you remove AVG. If you do not get help, let me know.
As for the drivers disk, Request Backup Disks USA. You should be able to get one set of backup disks. Dell will most likely send them to you.

l've had lots of call to fix machines affected by AVG (and Norton) recently
I fixed a machine with AVG problems that would connect to the internet, but could not download anything because there was no IP address
Turned out it was because AVG had installed network filters that prevented the customer from connecting to the net.
The AVG filter will appear in the network adapter card properties window if it is installed.
To ininstall the AVG filter, uncheck the box in network adapter card properties window and click uninstall,
look in all other network adapter to check its completely gone.
Problem solved
Also had trouble uninstalling AVG from windows.
Theres an AVG uninstaller file available on their support website.

Hi, I went with AVG because it's the only one I could find that will scan emails to my email program on my computer. My ISP uses different ports. Not to get off topic here but I have heard of others having similar issues with AVG. Luckily, by your description it sounds as if my situation is a bit different than what you've been seeing. I have no problem connecting, etc.,with AVG installed.and do have the AVG network filters.
My problem is I need to uninstall and re-install AVG and when I try to uninstall AVG, it only partially uninstalls. It also removes my network adapters and wireless adapter drivers. These are what I've been trying to get so I can download back ups on an external drive. I was advised to ask Dell for a drivers disk (which I did). They don't have them but did give me a list of links to download newer drivers. Once I get everything I need, then I can try to uninstall AVG. I've tried using add/remove programs, AVG's uninstall tool in Safe Mode, and the uninstall feature included with it. None will do more than a partial uninstall. I read somewhere else to use the uninstall tool and then use Revo Uninstaller to get the rest. I'll be going over to community support for anti-virus and see what more info there may be available before starting.
Thanks for your input.

Now that I have the links for the drivers I'm going to be needing, I'll head on over there in a few days and see what suggestions they have. Thanks
