Network Adaptor (?) problem with receiving packets (trying to get Internet)

Hi, I have a great Inspiron 510m, which until recently was working very nicely. I had downloaded a trojan from the Internet that kept giving me pop-up junk. Eventually my NETWORK ADAPTOR showed that it couldn't receive packets, but it can still SEND packets ... my cable connection to the Internet is gone ...

My Dell has a 3-year extended warranty, but I'm in Indonesia (no support for Inspiron). Nevertheless, I have been 4 or 5 times to the Dell shop. I did a COMPLETE reformat and system reinstall, but it's still not working (the wireless is working well -- but I can't use the ethernet at home ...).

I ran the Intel diagnostics tool, and IT shows the receipt AND sending of packets, but not the MS-icon that manages the internet connection. No internet, nearly one week later.

Can someone please suggest a way to solve this mess?

All good wishes from Jakarta ... Walter (sensibilita)

hi volcano,

thanks for your tips! i did a new reinstal of the links you gave me, too, but the problem still exists! The Diagnosis tool
tells me that i am receiving and sending packets, but not my windows internet icon -- and of course nothing is coming through
that connects me to the internet ...

as i suggested originally, maybe a virus (trojan) may have been responsible -- but after a reformat and reinstall, the problem
still persists ...

DELL doesn't seem to know how to help me ... it's very frustrating, since i have to use public (WIFI) internet access,
which in jakarta is very inconvenient (and also not cheap)!

cheers, walter

To further help troubleshoot this problem, go to Start > Run and type cmd then click OK. In the command prompt window that opens, type ipconfig /all then hit the enter key. Write down the output from this command or select it and save it to a txt file, then copy this output into a reply to this message.

Try downloading and running winsockfix for Windows XP from the Here.

Hi Steve:

great tip! At one point I could even see the RECEIVING of packets
in my MS-icon -- but that was all!

Subsequently I tried to remove some DHCP values, but these keep coming
back -- like a hidden virus -- but the cause of my problems is clear,
as it appears to me: problems with the DHCP in the registry!

My IP-Address at home is also prefaced with DHCP IP (e.g.) : ........

Is there a way of PATCHING the TCP/IP values in my registry, so that
I can connect again?

Cheers, Walter

Current Control Set/Services/TCP Interfaces (remove DHCP values)

Enable DHCP

DHCP IP Address (shows)

IP Address: 0:0:0:0

You claiimed to have reinstalled Windows XP.   This should have cleared the registry of any problems put in by the virus/trojan.  I don't mess with the registry, so I have no idea what to expect in the registry and I have no recommendations.  When you reinstalled, did you do a clean reinstallation (i.e. reformatting the drive before installing)?

Thanks for your great help, Steve!

Well, I did reformat & reinstall ... I thought the intruder had "slipped in" to the BIOS, or was resident somewhere else ... all improbable/impossible, but today I spent more than an hour on the phone (and with a technician using the Dell Remote Desktop)in a WIFI-cafe; he suggested I install a different driver .... we did that.... I went home, did all I was expected to do .... but it still didn't work .... same problem as before .... and then I thought, what the heck: keep the notebook's Ethernet connected ... and I would try to "repair" etc., from time to time ... nothing worked. Maybe five hours later I went to the notebook, said a prayer with the promise that I would not spend too much time on the computer again henceforth .... well, I thought ....hmmm, prayers .... and twenty minutes or so later I heard noises from my computer .... I thought, admn [admn: this word contrues actually diffferently, but the Forum does not allow me post it ... hehehe ....]system noises .... checked the MS-Internet icon: now it showed the receipt of some packets .... WEIRD!! I really felt a little strange.

So I brought up my Firefox out of the woods, and the browser connected -- and not slow either, but with a foxtrot step .... very strange!

And the events occurred EXACTLY as I described them above!!

Thank you for your kind help, and your great patience, Steve!
