Network with my PC

Hi there

I am trying to get the Inspiron 6000 to connect to the net via my router, a A Dlink DSL-504T router. Can you use the following cable to connect the laptop to that router ?
We have tried with no success. IN the network options, its says the following

1)Wireless Network Connections
Not Connected,Firewalled
Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200BG network connections

and

2)Local Area Connection
Network cable unplugged,Firewalled
Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller

Both of the above have red Crosses next to them exept the next one which says

3)1394 Connection
Connected,Firewalled
1394 Net adapter

Belkin Cat5e Network Patch Cable 10m - Grey (CB-004-BE)

We only want the laptop to connect to the net now and again, hence using a cable to connect rather than a wireless setup.

Help as its doing my head in :(

TIA

Kev

Sorted.

Found something in another thread relating the problem too Norton Security Centre and Norton Anti Virus,so I uninstalled them and added my own Anti Virus and Firewall.

Thanx
