New Win 7 Vostro drops dsl modem/router when XP is also connected

My new Win 7 (32) Vostro 230 with a Broadcom Netlink Network card drops (permanently resets) my 2wire Gateway 2701HGV-W (Bigpond) Router/Modem when any of my other PCs are connected (win 2000 and XP). The only way I can get it to work is by switching the other PCs off and only run the Vosto Win7 PC. For the time being I only use the weired connections. This is realy puzzling me. Win 2000 and XP on their own and Win 7 on its own seem to work perfecly alright but not together. Any hint would be appreciated ...

Thanks!

Hi Mungopark,

Do all PCs have a static IP, or are they set to obtain an IP address automatically?

Thanks for your quick response,
All PCs get a dynamic internal IP from the router/modem of the type e.g. 10.0.0.4 (default way). Externally I have a static IP. I can fix and set the internal ones statically as well. I believe I tried that but may try it again?
Thanks

What I would do is check which IPs are being taken before the XP computer is connected, then check which IP the XP computer wants.

Thanks,

I checked which internal IPs and XP seems to favour 10.0.0.4 and Win 7 the 10.0.0.5. I assigned the various PCs fixed ips in my router a bit outside the normally automatically assigned ones e.g PC1: 10.0.0.10,  PC2: 10.0.0.20 etc. Individually they worked but in combination it worked and did not work pretty much the same way as before. I tried to connect the Laptop (XP) through wireless and bingo it worked and did not interfere. That brought me to the idea that there might be a problem with one of my cables? They are all Cat5 but some are rather old ...  well, I am no expert on etherent cables but swapped ethernet cables around and connected the one which came with the router/modem to the new Vostro (Win 7) and for the time being it seems to work. I will get a new cable. Maybe that was all what was required? I'll let you know. :emotion-1:

Osprey4,

Well, the cables were alright and after some more plugging, unplugging and restarting of the various PCs I concluded that it must be the Router/DSL Modem. I rang Bigpond/Telstra and they confirmed that the 2701HGV-W Modem/Router was faulty - nearly constantly resetting itself (they can test it online). They sent a replacement Thomson TG782T and everything works fine now.

What confused me was that initially I could get it to work by unplugging all PCs from the router/modem, resetting (switching off and on) the router and after DSL and Internet was initialised OK (on LEDs), connecting ONE PC only to the router. However, that also failed later but then I had my new.

I appreciate your help!

Cheers
