Not connecting to new wirless modem

I have recently purchased a new HUAWEI wireless modem. This lovely little device will connect beautifully to my iPad, to all the Acer computers at work, to my Samsung mobile phone. It will not however successfuly connect wirlessly to my Dell Inspiron N5010.

I plug it in via a USB port and can connect to the internet that way. If I unplug the USB cable the computer says I am connected but when I try to access a webpage the browser says I am not connected. In the bottom right of my screen my computer says I am connected. This is most confusing and frustrating. I took the computer to work and had the IT department look at it but they had no answers for me.

This same computer has recently been connecting to a different wireless modem so I am at a loss.

Do I need to update something? If so, what?

I would dearly love to get on the net wirelessly. Can anyone help?

rosellainoz,

Try running an ipconfig /all log and post it back here.

I am sorry. I tried to do this but had no luck. The first instruction produced a quick flash on my computer screen but no log that I could copy. The second instruction produced a long list that needed to be scrolled to read it all. I could not work out how to copy this list apart from taking a couple of screen shots and saving as bit map images and posting the images. A right click on the box would not let me copy paste, which I am used to doing.

Am I doing something wrong?

I think I have discovered how to copy it. I'll try now.

rosellainoz,

Did you ever setup the wireless router?

Make and model of your wireless router? What type of security? What channel?

The DW1501 Wireless-N WLAN Half-Mini Card works on the 2.4GHz Frequency ONLY.

The device installs every time I plug it into the computer. It has an autorun.exe

I have a HUAWEI E586. It is a 3G device.

I cannot work out what the frequesncy is. There was no information provided to me with the device. It seems these days that instruction manuals are getting smaller and smaller and we are expected to know all the information that accompanying booklets used to include. Hence my difficulties.

As I said previously this device works on all other machines I have tried to connect it to, and some of those without any installation. It is most confusing.

I have been able to find the following in my internet search

HUAWEI Mobile WiFi E586 is a high-speed packet access mobile hotspot. It is a multi-mode wireless terminal for SOHO and business professionals, it can support 5 Wi-Fi devices connecting and can stay online anytime and anywhere.

Feature

•Able to connect with Tablet, Laptop, notebook and different types of Wi-Fi devices

•Support up to 5 Wi-Fi enable devices at the same time

•One-touch connection and OLED screen display

•Friendly user interface

•5 hours working and 280 hours stand-by by battery (while Wi-Fi is off) *

*Depending on the state of network and environment

Product Spec

•Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n

•HSPA+/HSPA/UMTS (3G)  EDGE/GPRS/GSM(2G)

•HSPA+ data service up to 21.6 Mbps

•HSUPA data service up to 5.76 Mbps

•Equalizer and receive diversity

•microSD Card Slot(Up to 32GB)

•Data and SMS Service

System requirements

•Windows XP SP2/SP3, Windows Vista SP1/SP2, Windows 7

•MAC OS X 10.5,MAC OS X 10.6,MAC OS X 10.7

•Hardware system should meet the recommended requirements for the installed OS version

•Display resolution: 1024*768 or above

Band: 3G: HSPA+/HSUPA/HSDPA/UMTS; 2G: GSM/GPRS/EDGE

Another confusing thing is that when I check my connection the computer says I am connected. But I cannot open any web pages. I am hoping someone can explain that to me.

Your 3G device connects to the 3G network and not a wireless network.

Not familar with these devices.

You need to install the software for the device from the company you have your ISP with. One the drivers are installed, the device should remain installed.

Was the HUAWEI E586 setup?

With the device attached...

Start, control panel, device manager, network.

You may see the device listed. It may have a yellow exclaimination mark or may not. Right click on the HUAWEI E586, then left click update driver. If you have the drivers on your system, the drivers will install and the device should connect.

Some of these devices show a color, like green, when connected.
