Old Computer
I have two computers connected to a router, a Dell and a Compaq. However, the only computer that seems to be visible on the network is the Dell. I used the WinXP CD to configure my older Compaq, which is running Win98. I tried connecting to the net from my Compaq, but it can't detect the network settings. I can't even release/renew my IP on my Compaq. What are the possible reasons for this?

Why would you need to use a Windows XP CD to configure the network on you Compaq running Windows 98? You're not trying to use Internet Connection Sharing are you? It is not necessary with a router. All you should need to do on the Compaq is to set the TCP/IP properties to Obtain an IP address automatically. If Internet Connection Sharing is enabled on any of the computers, disable it.

Do the link lights on both the network card and port on the router into which the network cable is plugged light up? Has this network card ever worked before? Did the network card come with diagnostic software you can run to see if it is functioning properly?

What is the exact text of the error message? Do you have the correct Windows 98 drivers for the printer installed on the Compaq?
