Open Wireless network works, but WEP doesn't

I recently bought a DLINK 524 (802.11g) wireless router to use with my dad's Dell Inspiron that has a TrueMobile 1300 card. If I set the network as open and unencrypted, the laptop connects to the network and internet easily and quickly. But When I enable WEP 64-bit encryption and assign a HEX key, and then try to connect to the network from the laptop using that key, XP brings up a connecting window, but never connects. It just times out. My router also has an option of using WPA-PSK protection, which I believe is less secure than a WEP key. Anyways, when I use a WPA-PSK password, the network works fine, and my the laptop can connect to it. So I have two questions: 1) Does anyone know why the connection isn't working when I use WEP? 2) Is WPA-PSK secure enough? WPA-PSK is by far more secure than a WEP key.  Your WEP difficulties is probably due to the TM routine wanting less characters in the keys.  Use WPA.
