Optiplex GX150 PCI Ethernet controller missing?

Question

I'm running windows 98 SE on a Optiplex GX150 ystem, I have 3 Drives missing 1- PCI Multimedia Audio Device 2- PCI System Management Bus 3- PCI Ethernet Controller   I got the Audio fix so far but need help with the other two. can anyone direct me to a link? Did you reinstall Windows 98 on the system. If so, did you reinstall the Intel 800 Series Integrated Chipset drivers? They're needed before any of the integrated devices on the motherboard will be properly recognized. Here's the list of all Dell-provided drivers for the GX150/Win98.

Im afraid I did not install the chip set first, that would explain why the PCi sound dont work! well let mestart again with the chips and then I'll go from there, I purchased the Windows 98 Se from the store full version on a clean Hard drive, thanks for the reply and please check again in case I need more help! thanks.

Your issues are related to the Chipset Drivers.

Install the INF update first.

well I've tried updating the following:   1-Intel 800 series chipset V 2.30.021 A04 2- INF update utility v 5.001012 3- R45973.EXE AD1885 Integrated Audio driver 4- file Z0377C04.exe   and I get the following error #2 'ISA pnp.vxd' asked me to put the windows 98 cdrom to find file but then file is not found, eventually I skip this file but i get no sound on none of my games I only get the CD player to play music.  The ISApnp.VXD comes out of a yellow ? mark on the PCI ISA bridge device, if that helps.   Im thinking to upgrade to ME to see if that helps to solved this problem I wanted 98 SE because of older games but this issue is getting to me.  Anymore suggestions on where to find this file? gian99, Apparently this is a common problem with Win98 installations. See if the posts in this thread, found by searching Google for isapnp.vxd missing, help resolve the problem. Jim

Thanks for the link JIm, I hate to ask this but how do I copy the windows98 to a directory on the c drive like the possible solution sugessted?

"Everything is now on the C drive. I copied the whole win98se cd-rom to a directory on the c drive and now point to it during driver installations. No problems with driver installations now. Strange thing though, the cd-rom and the c drive directory are identical, but the install drivers wizard finds and takes the required files from the win98se directory on the c drive but not from the win98se cd-rom in the dvd drive."

Tell windows to look for the WIN98 CD under C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS If this is a Dell Install the Source Files will be there.

Well I found a solution to the 'ISApnp.vxd' problem,  you needed to type C:\windows\system no spaces on the 'look in this file window' promt and that allows the file to be recognise by the system. Ok so whats the problem u say now? so I reinstalled the Audio drive R45973.exe to solve my audio problem now i get NO ADI CODEC INSTALL after installation I get sound if I place a cd but no sound if I place a game this is my kids gaming computer so sound is very important.  Again any suggestions?

Well thank you all for replying after much trouble shoot I uploaded ME version and so far it works ok, I gave up on W98se I tried all types of combinations to fix the driver/chipset problem without much success,  so far ME is doing the job, I did find out a great thing.........there are still people willing to help you with your computer problems for free.  So thank you all.

You have corrupted registry and contaminated install. If you install WIN98SE Then the chipset drivers then the other drivers it works just fine.
