Port cannot open, used by another application.
I have not been able to to dial up since 5/11. My new 8300 restarted on it's own and My Conextant V.92 modem gives me a 633 error message that the port it is attached to cannot be opened because it is being used by another application.
When I used the modem restore disk it uninstalled it but couldn't reinstall it. I got it back by going back a day and Dell sent me a different disk. But I am still getting the same error. Plus device manager says modem is working properly, fax says there is no modem.
I have talked to at least 5 techs from India and my ISP. It has been 10 days. Please, can anyone help me. I have tried everything.

I dial-up through Baraga Telephone Co. and no they didn't have me download any special software. I checked with them and they said they support the V.92 modem. Lines are good, settings are right. They thought it was the modem. The next Dell tech. I talked to had me move the modem card to a dif. slot. Computer then recognized the modem but it still didn't work. She is having a new modem sent and a tech. will come and install it. But now my sound doesn't work.
I did a system diag scan and it had all kinds of errors: Intel ICH5 Audio, error code 1B22:OF1B & 1B22:101B; Modem (TAD), not installed; Intrusion Switch, n/i; Front Panel Speaker, n/i; Front Chasis Fan, n/i.

gilliganS,
Let's see what happens after the new modem is installed.

nazprez,
Usually if there is a hardware issue, the modem would not been seen at all. The error message is stating that another application has control of the port. I don't think it's an operating system issue but another application that is running that is causing this.
Let's keep this here and see if anybody else has any other ideas.

My new modem was installed and everything was back to normal. Tech that installed it said the problem definitely was the modem. My phone line runs through a surge protector and there was no electrical storm when it went out., so I don't know what happened.
However, I was not pleased when I read on the box that I was sent a refurbished modem and not a new one. My computer was less than two weeks old. I think I should have been sent a new replacement.

I too am having the same problem with Error 633 modem or other connection device already in use or is not configured properly.... Error result 67 com port conflict... I had this problem before right after I got my system wasn't even 1 month old. I had to restore system and all that and still didn't clear problem. They finally sent a new modem and worked fine for about 6 months maybe; it went out again on August 17, 2004, installed new modem; lasted for 4-days same problem occurred again went thru same crude with support, they sent another modem on Tuesday August 24, 2004, got it 25th worked fine for 1 DAY had to call again this morning August 27, 2004, went thru all troubleshooting with no resolution; now they won't send a new modem since I've already been sent 2 in past week; now sending me restore CDs in mail to be received by wednesday latest and I know darn well; it will NOT fix my problem.... Isn't there a permanent solution since this will be forth modem, which I know they are going to have to send after I go thru the darn aggravation of backing up my system again, restoring pc from CDs and reinstalling all my software & data. Not to mention having to use alternative (laptop) to get online. I work at home and internet access is essentional. I have never been so aggravated with a pc system as I have with this Dell, which I thought was suppose to be good...

I had identical situation, except Dell did replace my motherboard. The motherboard somehow wouldn't allow drivers to install, so I had worse problems after reformatting. They sent a replacement modem (#3) at the same time. Technician said it was bad as soon as he put it in. (Crackling sound, different problem from port conflict). Dell said they would not send another modem until I had my phone line checked. I had phone line checked but I just don't want to deal with the Dell run-around. My 14 yr old talked to our ISP and they sent us a new modem - not a refurbished one! But I am afraid to install it before I check the fine print about voiding my warranty.
Someone told me that when things are shipped and the delivery service (UPS, etc.) scan the electronic items it can damage components. I suppose that is a question for another thread.
I have not had error 633 since my motherboard was replaced.

I know in the case of the removable modems that these modems were fine one operated for years and still would be if I didn't attach it to my DELL. This is now starting to cost me $$$ as my DELL is eating modems like crazy. What is going on here???
I noticed that the Ports (COM & LPT) object is no longer showing up in DeviceManager. I am not sure how long this has been the case, and it could be a clue to the problem, the question is what started this to begin with.
Any info ASAP would be helpful.

Oh, and I would not worry about voiding your warranty, I would worry about destroying the new modem! If you did install it, is it still working???

I still did not install the new modem. The one the technician installed is limping along, sometimes it acts up with a lot of noise and fails to dial, but I just haven't taken the time to do it. One of these days... Changing the motherboard did seem to fix the problem.
Something I found interesting through my ordeal was that one Dell tech. said I would have to do a full recovery on my computer. It would take hours to load everything back on from the disks that came with it, but he would call back and walk me through it. Needless to say he never called back, but another tech. from Texas said she would "never put me through that pain". She sent me a 4 disk set specific to my computer and it took less than 15 minutes to do the while process.
