Problems with ASUS USB adapter

Hi,

I just bought an ASUS USB adapter for a wireless DSL Modem, which should create a wireless LAN through a USB (1.1) port. The ASUS adapter is the WL-167g (see for reference http://www.asus.it/products4.aspx?l1=12&l2=42&l3=136&model=57&modelmenu=1)

The installation was quite easy and at the beginning the adapter seemed to work. Unfortunately, this is no longer the case. At a certain point the adapter disappeared from the system and all I get now is an error message saying that the system cannot recognise the USB peripheral. I have unistalled and re-installed the drivers provided by ASUS several times, to no avail. The mystery is that sometimes the adapter works again, only for a few minutes; but then it stops again and all I get is the usual message error.

I have a Dimension 8200 multimedia extreme, intel chipset 850e and Windows XP Home Edition SP2.

Could all this depend on the fact that the Asus adapter is supposed to work with USB 2.0 and I only have 1.1 on my PC? By the way, I have tried all the 4 USB ports (two on the front, two on the rear), always with the same result.

Did anybody experience the same problem? Is there anybody capable of helping me to solve it?

Thanks a lot in advance
