Recently unable to open Yahoo E-Mail attachments

I noticed last Saturday, I can no longer open yahoo mail attachments in my primary e-mail account.  If I send the e-mail to my wife's sub account on the same computer, the attachment opens fine and the process acts like it always did.  If I log into my primary yahoo webmail account from another computer across town it also works just fine.  When I attempt to open the attachment, the dialog box opens up indicating that Norton is scanning the file - once completed, I get the download now option.  When I click on the download box, the bar graph indicates progress and disappears but no open/save/cancel box appears.  AT&T support spent hours on the problem said they could not help me - try elsewhere.

I updated to IE 8 a couple of weeks ago.  If the problem started then, I did not notice it.  The Yahoo e-mail client is "new & improved" as of last Saturday as well.

Bigfoot76,

My guess is that you might have an add-on in IE8 that your wife's account doesn't. I have a yahoo email account but do not get attachments there. I have a gmail account and do most of my mail emails from there. The Yahoo account is for junk mail and subscriptions.

Open Internet Explorer, then click on tools, manage add-ons, enable or disable add-ons. Try disabling them all. Then cloce IE8. See if you can open it now. If so, then one of the add-ons is the culprit. Slowly enable each add-on, one at a time, until it doesn't work. Or you can look at your add-ons and compare them to your wife's add-ons. I use Mozilla Firefox for my web serfing and I also use Mozilla Thunderbird for my email program. I download my emails to my computer to make it easier to read them, instead of using the webserver. Yahoo charges a fee to use an email program and Gmail is FREE.

Another guess would be your virus program but if your wife's account is on your computer, then it opens on her's, I kinda ruled the virus program out.

What is type of file is this?

Bigfoot76,

I was hoping, if it's not too late, to have yo look at Trend Micros settings on your wifes sub account. Maybe just a setting. We used to use Trend micro at work they uninstalled it, reinstalled it and it would always install the older version. They wasted so much time on it that were scratching their heads.

I use FREE Avast Home Edition and have no problems. Keep me posted.

Thanks Rick,

I briefly disabled my Trend Micro PC-cillin completely and both my Yahoo primary and sub accounts can open attachments.  I re-enabled Trend Micro and now I'm back to my original problem - the primary account can not open attachments but the sub can.  I had previously changed all the setting on Trend that I thought might have and effect - but nothing helped.  I will try un-installing and re-installing Trend to see if that will clear up my problem.

Rick,

I un-installed Micro Trend 14 and downloaded version 16.6  - Still got the same results.  Even though disabling Micro Trend eliminated the problem, they insisted the issue was with Yahoo Mail.  I looked around at the new features of 16.6 and disabled an anti-phishing option.  For now at least, that has cleared up my problem.  I can now open all attachments in both the primary and sub mail accounts of Yahoo Mail.  Many thanks for your interest and help - got me thinking and started down the right path.

Dave,

Never gave the phising filter much thought. Maybe it's because I don't use it. Matter of fact, I don't use Internet Explorer, neither. I use Mozilla Firefox

Glad you got it working.

Take care,
