Router/Connecting problem with Linksys WRT54G Routher

I'm not able to get online although every indication is that I'm connected to my network.  I'm using an WRT54G Linksys Wireless Router.  The computer is a Dell Inspiron B130 using Windows XP.  When I go into the system tool on the (Wireless 1470 Dual Band WLAN Mini-PCI Card), the Link Status shows a signal; however, I'm unable to get onto the internet.  I have been able to get on many other wireless networks except for the one I have set up in the house.

I tried to call Linksys; however, they seem to think it is Dell Wireless Card issue..any ideas?

1.  Check your IP assignment from the router

Go to Start > All Programs > Accessorries > Command Prompt, execute: IPCONFIG /ALL

Make sure IP, DNS, Default Gateway addresses show a valid IP.  Linksys by default starts assigning network IP address at 192.168.1.100, the next IP is 192.168.1.101, and so on...

2.  Logon to your router at http://192.168.1.1 (default password is admin, which should be changed to a more unique one) and go to Status page and check if your router has connected to the Internet

The router is online since you're able to obtain a valid WAN IP under Internet Port.

Okay, now I was able log onto the router.  I went to the status tab to determine if the router was connected.  I'm not sure what to look for; however, I know that router is working on my desktop and one other laptop; however, I haven't been able to get it work on this one.

In the status tab, it has several things 1: Domain name: gt01.aol.com, 2: IP Address: 68.204.99.1 and two DNS Addresses

Does any of this help?

I did performed the steps in number 1 and everything IP address appeared to be as explained.  When I was trying to attempt the procedures outlined in number 2; I couldn't access the router. I received a 401 Unauthorized.   I don't believe that I have ever changed any of the settings to access the router...when I type in http://192.168.1.1 it asks for a user name and password...I didn't know what to put in for the user name and there where no options to select in the drop-down (arrow button).  Is there something that I may have missed?

If you're on DSL try setting your router to PPPoE rather than DHCP. Restart your computer after changing router setup.

I'm using AOL Broadband via a cable modem...Would changing the setting router to PPPoE rather than DHCP work?  You indicated it could with a DSL, is Cable the same?  If I changed it, would it affect the other two computers that I have been able to use with the wireless router.

Thank you for your time.

Different types of broadband connections use different ways to get connected.  Various DSL connections (DSL, ADSL, VDSL, etc.) commonly use PPPoE dialler to connect, while cable broadband uses DHCP.  I do not recommend you change your router's connection type since it doesn't have any problem connecting to the broadband connection.

Can you please post the results of your IPCONFIG /ALL of the problem computer here?  You can partially mask out any external IP addresses you care not to reveal.
