Router Software Missing Cable Internet Connection
Hey team!
I hope this is a quick question that will be obvious to someone who knows. I use a Dell 4500 which is connected to the internet through a cable modem via a LAN connection. The cable box is a Toshiba PCX 2600. The cable modem attachs to the computer via a CNet PRO200WL PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter. This works flawlessly (so far) and is wonderful.
For Christmas, I bought my son a Dell 2400. I would like to connect his computer to mine in a wireless system -- and then through mine to the internet. Eventually we would like to play games together -- both between just the two of us, and eventually, with others via the web. The Dell salesperson told me to buy a True Mobile 2300 Router and a 1180 Wireless USB Adapter. They have both arrived.
Unfortunately, I am stymied at the first step. The directions tell me to put in the installation software for the 2300 Router and follow the directions -- which is straightforward. My problem is that the software is unable to find the internet connection, despite the fact that I am regularly on the internet even as I am struggling to solve this initial impediment. I have been searching through my configuration files, have read through the Dell support messages, and haven't found anything that answers my question.
I imagine the question and answer is simple, but it alludes me. What can I do to get the 2300 software to see the working internet connection I have through the cable model?
I am grateful for any assistance.

Ghawk845,
The TM2300 control utility has a serious flaw in it that tries to identify the router at the wrong IP address. That's why it does not recognize your router. The problem has been documented many times on the networking forums here.
To solve the problem, uninstall the control utility and use the web-based configuration tool. The TM2300 User's Guide is here. Follow the links "Managing your Router" and Web-based Configuration Tool. Simply start Internet Explorer and navigate to http://192.168.2.1, which is the address of the TM2300 on your LAN. Everything you can do with the control utility you can do with the web-cased Configuration Tool.

To Paladin:
After a few hours, I was finally able to figure out how to configure the 2300 router with its on-board manual and configuration software. Thank you.
Unfortunately, I have had no better luck with the 1180 wireless USB adaptor. Again, I followed the instructions that came with the adaptor, which not surprisingly did not work. When I plugged in the USB adaptor, the computer (new 2400 with XP) did not recognize the new hardware. So I disconnected the adaptor and loaded the drivers from the CD. When I plugged in the adaptor, though, the computer still does not recognize it. No "Wireless Internet Connection" appears in either the right hand corner or in the Network Connections link of the Control Panel. The Client Manager does appear in the icon tray with a red x -- but double clicking on it does not bring up a box that allows me to access properties.
The little green light on the adaptor itself does blip when I connect it to the USB port. I have tried several of the ports, in case one was not working. If I point my cursor at the Client Manager, a box pops up that notes that no card is detected. There is an ethernet card in the computer -- but the cord from the adaptor only has a USB connector. Am I supposed to connect the wireless adaptor to the ethernet card?
I am sorry to bother you again, and am staggered at the difficulty in making this technology work -- considering I am using all Dell products according to their instructions.
Again, any help would be greatly appreciated,
_Paladin

Ghawk845,
Since the TM1180 is not being recognized by the system when it is plugged in, there may be a USB problem with the PC. Are there any other USB devices connected and what is there status? Try rebooting the PC with the TM1180 disconnected. Once WinXP is up, plug the TM1180 into a USB port and see if it is recognized. The TM180 can only connect to a USB port.
Are there any devices in Device Manager flagged with a yellow !? It might not be a bad idea to download the latest available chipset drivers for the D2400 from the Downloads tab above and update them.
I also suggest you connect the D2400 to the TM2300 with an ethernet cable temporarily and do a Windows Update to install all the available Critical Updates.
