SBC DSL

I have tried SBC DSL and have had nothing but problems.  I have a Lattitude 850.  When I installed the software from the disk, I got a blue screen error message that said that Windows would not open up.  Dell told me to try to download the software from the net.  I did that and got the error message again.  When I take off the SBC software, my laptop works fine.  I contacted SBC and got a link to fix the problem.  Instead of fixing it it caused another problem, I lost my task bar and any icons on my desk top.  I really to cancel SBC and go with another provider.  Does anyone have any suggestions?  Has anyone had similar problems?
