Setting up a wireless network for an Inspiron 1300

Hi There,

I'm fairly new to setting up computer networks so excuse my lack of knowledge and proper lingo.

I have a computer in my house with a wireless router.  I would to get my Inspiron 1300 notebook to connect to that network.  The network on the computer with the wireless router is open (theres no network key).  My inspiron 1300 can see the connection, and when I click on it to connect to it, a box comes up and tells me that it is attempting to connect to the network.  It does this for about 30 seconds and then it closes but I am still not connected to the internet.

I have not run any wizards or anything of that sort.  Do I need to run that in order to connect to an open connection?  Like I said earlier, I'm new to this so if someone could give me a really easy explaination that would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks a lot!
-Erin

To help troubleshoot this problem, go to Start > Run and type cmd then click OK. In the command prompt window that opens, type ipconfig /all then hit the enter key. Write down the output from this command or select it and save it to a txt file, then copy this output into a reply to this message.

Hi Steve,

Alright so when I run the cmd and ip config this is what comes up:

Host: Erin
Primary DNS Suffix: (it's blank and says nothing)
Node Type: Broadcast
IP routing Enabled:  No
WINS Proxy Enabled:  No

Ethernet Adapter to Wireless Connection:

Media State:  Media Disabled
Description:  Dell wireless 1370 WLAN Mini-PCI Card
Physical Address:  00-14-A5-920560A

I hope this helps.  Thanks a lot Steve!

Open Network Connections and right-click on your wireless network connetion.  There should be an option to Enable the connection.  See if enabling it fixes the problem.

Hi Vicky,

Thanks for your response.  I have a Dell Wireless 1370 WLAN mini-pci card in my Inspirion.  The router I'm trying to connect to is a US robotics, model US8054 and no I have not been connecting to a hot spot.

ps. I'm a girl, not a sir ;)

Is the wireless network adapter turned on?  The Fn F2 key combinatin toggles the wireless radio on and off.  Try that and see if you can get it turned on.  According to your ipconfig output, it is either not enabled or not turned on.

Hey Steve,

I tried that as well disabling and turning it back on it made no difference.  However, the Intel/Pro Wireless program says that There are no supported Wireless adapters in the system... The entire page is grey and I can't click on anything.

Geeeez... wireless connections are trickey..

I know all of my wireless stuff works, my friend was able to set me up on her network at her house and the internet works no problem.  I'm not sure why I can't connect to mine.

Thanks for all your help again!
