Sharing wired ethernet connection over wireless

Hi all. I've got a D600 with the TrueMobile 1300 card, running Windows 2000 Professional. I'm wired up to the internet via ethernet and I'm trying to get the machine to share the internet connection via Wi-Fi. I've been reading and hunting for days and haven't managed to figure it out yet. Any suggestions?

You'll need a router that supports wireless connections.  This article at DSL Reports should help clarify things for you.

Well, thanks for the suggestion. I should probably clarify things here....

When I'm at home, I do run everything off my router. But right now, I'm out on business travel. I use my Latitude to connect to the one ethernet port I have (connecting through my company's auto configuring proxy). I'd like to make use of the internet sharing capability of Windows to temporarily turn my Latitude into a pseudo NAT wireless router. Is there no way to make use of the internet sharing to share my wired connection over Wi-Fi?

Not to sound smug, but my mac does this without a problem.....

So is the idea to allow other wireless clients to share the wired connection on your laptop?

Win2K supports  Internet Connection Sharing. It sounds like that's what you're wanting to do...right?

Yeah, I have several wireless clients that I want to be able to share the wired connection to my laptop. I've tried turning on the internet connection sharing feature on the ethernet port. The problem is getting the wireless card to act as a base station for my other wireless clients. I've tried setting up the wireless in ad-hoc mode and I've been able to get my other computers to connect to the laptop, but the internet connection sharing doesn't work.

machome,

(Sorry for the delayed response. The Dell forum servers were down for a very long time yesterday and today!)

I don't think Win2K (unlike FreeBSD/MacOS X) supports running a wireless adapter in "infrastructure" mode, so setting up all the adapters in "ad-hoc" mode with the same SSID is what you'll need to do.

ICS (at least XP's, which I've heard more about) is very finicky about IP address assignment. The only setups that seem to work reliably involve using DHCP on the ICS server to assign IP addresses to the clients.

What errors are being logged by ICS?

Thanks for the response Jim. I'll have to try it out again later (don't have all my computers with me right now). I did have them successfully "talking" to each other in ad hoc mode, but the internet connection just wasn't being shared. I suppose it could have something to do with the fact that in ad hoc mode, my Latitude wasn't acting as a DHCP server. *sigh*

It's starting to sound like a cheap 10/100 PC Card and an ethernet hub may be the answer.....

There were some wireless fixes/enhancements in Win2K service pack 4. I've been avoiding it, because there were also some reports of severe problems associated with it.

So...not a suggestion...just a thought!

Tempting, but since this is a company owned/managed computer, I should probably stick to the standard issue SP3. I think I'm officially giving up on this plan. I will just let this episode serve as evidence that I'm not crazy for prefering my mac. Nothing like finding a minor annoyance with windows to push me further into mac using oblivion....
