Slow File Sharing

File sharing is extremely slow between the 2 computers in my signature. I can get to individual folders in 'My Network Places' pretty quickly, but opening sub-folders and files is very slow. Here is the setup:

> Netgear Rangemax Router WPN824
> Desktop connected by ethernet cable
> Notebook using Netgear WPN511 Rangemax PC card
> Signal is strong (54 mbps)
> Security is WPA2
> Windows is NOT managing this connection.
> Access contol is activated and limited to notebook's address.
> Internet access is snappy and fine on both machines.

Any suggestions on how to speed up file sharing will be much appreciated.

P.S. As of this post, file sharing and data transfer is pretty snappy. Perhaps this morning the network was not quite in sync yet? I hope things stay the way they are now!

generally you can achieve good LAN performance results by increasing the tcp window size (as it's somewhat optimized for poor quality internet connections). programs like cablenut will do this for you even though they're really just increasing the value to something reasonable for WAN traffic. see if it helps and then experiment with going higher if most of your sharing in within the LAN.

Update: The slow as molasses performance returned, but when I turned off "Access Control" (Limits access to selected computers only- was set to only allow my notebook) everything went back to pretty snappy again- even accessing big files.

I'll look into increasing the tcp window size too for even more performance.

Update 2: Back to slow as molasses again! I don't get it....

Update 3: It seems that every time I log on to the router and make any change things speed up to an acceptable level. I'm not sure what causes them to slow down again.
