Slow File Transfer on Vista with SP1

I have networked my old Laptop running XP SP3 to my new Dell Vostro 1500 with Vista Business SP1, via a Belkin 54G wireless router.

At First I was really enjoying Vista (never used it before), looks pretty and the Dell was running sweet.

Then I decided to ease up on the old laptop and free some space.

Copy 9Gb's of music to new shiny Dell, 1 hour 45 minutes later it finishes. I realise this should be quicker, alot quicker so after searching on google, It becomes apparent this is common problem, so I install SP1 as this seemed the best solution.

It has solved the jumpy progress bar and estimated time problems when copying but thats it.

If I copy a 350mb file it takes 7-10mins and reaches a dizzying top speed of 900Kb/sec

Today I burnt a DVD just files nothing bigger than 6mb, 4.2Gb in total and it took 45mins real time but said it was going to take 13hours and the highest speed I noticed was 1.5Kb/sec.

If I hard wire the Laptops I get a max speed of 2mb/sec

Can anyone tell me if this is normal and am I doomed to spend the rest of my life waiting?

What were your transfer speeds before you installed SP3?

Hi jmwills,

Before SP3 they were the same, I'm not sure if its related but since SP1 the Media Player will not play smoothly even when reading from Local Disk. the same video plays fine with another player.

I've only had this laptop for 2 months and still getting to know Vista.

Before and after SP3 moving stuff was alot quicker to move over wireless and wired its even faster (To an Old Server with XP), sorry I cant give you exact speeds but what could explain the Life time it takes to burn a DVD. Also It takes forever to copy a DVD to HDD.
