Slow dialup connection

my friend has a dell 8400 with an Intel 537E modem. His dial up connection speed is about 35kpbs. I took my laptop, a dell inspiron 5100 with a conexant modem, an hooked up on his telephone line at 50.6kpbs. Does anyone have any tweaks or configuration changes that might improve his connection speeds, or is the Intel 537E just a "low end Cheapo" modem that needs to be replaced? Please advise. Thanks Newt

Did you connect to the same ISP?  If not, then your test may not be valid.
Also, did you use his RJ-11 teleco interconnect cable or did you use yours?  This can be an issue too.   Also did you use the same telco jack, in the residence that he is connected to?  These are all variables.

Finally, it can be the modem.  As noted the modems supplied with new PC's are not the "high priced" models.
