Slow downloads

If I go to the following website address:
and I download one of the videos there, I find that the download is slow over a cable modem internet connection. In slow, the speed is about 174, when at times, I've had at least 500 or more kbps.

Cable modem service speed usually goes up and down based upon load on the cable company's network.  Have you noticed slower speeds during a certain time of the day?  Perhaps more people are online at that time.

Data transfer speed is dependent on what is happening in the entire network.  Any point from the originating server, to the originating station's link to the web, to something in the web, to your local ISP's link to the web and finally the link between you and your ISP.  Any point can cause slowdowns depending on is happening.

If you consistently or mostly get slow downloads from one site, then it's the site, not the web or your ISP link.

you can try a program called cablenut -- though it won't help much if it's a server-side issue

In the past, I've had download speeds that range from 500 to 752kpbs.

I connect to the internet by means of a cable modem so I would guess T1. Is there a test that I can run to determine speed?

that is faster than T1, so you might have 3mbit or 5mbit from your isp

If I go on wii.ign.com and try to play a video in low res, the video will load up very slowly and it seems like the download bar will just barely inch along.

looks like they have slow servers.... if you have no problems with speeds on other sites i would suspect the wii.ign.com being the problem
