Thank you. Did you purchase your Dell Studio 1737 from BestBuy?  I'm wondering if the BestBuy models have a different default home page or if they use Dell's as well?

holzert,

I don't thin you want http://www.google.com/ig which is similar. To keep my computer up to date and secure, I do weekly scans with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, SuperAntiSpyware, and Spybot Search & Destroy, My virus protection is FREE Avast Home Edition. (Register, it's FREE they email you a product key good for 1 year. At the time it ready to expire, your register again, enetr new product keey, good for another year.) You can keep doing this or purchase for a discounted rate, very reasonable for protection.

To keep program updated, I use File Hippo's Update Checker, I use the stand alone version and update ONLY the FREE programs. I then use Secunia PSI to secure all the programs on my computer. I have an amost secure computer. Everything on my computer is secure except Internet Explorer and no fix is available.

Similar apps.  On my mom's we use AVG (uninstalled the Trend Micro), Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, Spy-Bot Search and Destory, and LapLock.  On my daughter's we use AVAST Free home edition, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, SpySweeper (licensed version), and LapLock.  The one thing I did do on both new lapotp systems was replace and add the antivirus, anti-malware, and security.  On my work laptop I use Symantec Endpoint and PGP Encryption (corporate force-fed).

If you want to watch a fast laptop slow down to a crawl, install PGP Encryption on it :o)

BTW, thanks for the Secunia link - I'm going to research it.

Also, just for fun, look at this dream machine:

I wonder how many folks can actually put out the cash for something like that? :o)  It's always nice to dream though.... Now THAT's a nice laptop :o)

holzert,

I purchased my Dell Studio 1737 from Dell's website. I have had great sucess with all the Dell computers that I have purchased and now purchased one for my daughter, a Studio 1537. My son got my old Inspirion B130. Both of them before had HP and Compaq and had nothing but problems.

Was that the page you were looking for?

It is similar, but not quite the same.  That's why I'm wondering if the systems that are sold by BestBuy are configured differently and perhaps have a different default home page 'out of the box.'

I purchased a Dell Studio 17 from BestBuy for my mom's use.  She lives in another state.  I use a Dell Latitude D630 provided by my work.  I also own a Dell Latitude D610 that I purchased (auction from work - was the previous incarnation of developer laptops) as well as an older Dell Dimension 3000 desktop that's still in use.  For my daughter, who is just starting college in the fall, we chose the HP dv4-1225dx from BestBuy.  She will be away from home so I purchased the Geek plan for service since I won't be able to fix it for her when things go wrong.  My daughter also has an old Compaq of mine but it's not of much use anymore since it is a Celeron and max installable memory is 1GB.  Never had any problems with it though in all these yeas.  I always wipe the system out and install my own OS and software though from scratch.  I didn't do that with the new HP laptop (it came with Bestbuy's backup on dvd) nor with my mom's Dell Studio 17.  My mom needed the 17" viewable screen (she is 72) and had to have a laptop in case she needs to consider assisted living in the future.  I also bought her a Dell Dimension desktop about 4 years ago now but it reached the end of its life cycle.  My daughter wanted something more portable to carry to class.

Considering all of the Dells, Compaqs, and HPs I've purchased or used over the years it would be nice if one of them would return the favor and give me one (laptop) as a write-off.  Due to purchasing for my daughter, family, friends, and my mom all the time, my own is last on the list.  One day I'll get me my own newer laptop :o)  Isn't that the way it goes?  I'm enjoying the work I do on the Dell Latitude D630 but it's my development machine and since it is a work machine and operates through a firewall vpn to the office, I can only use it for work.  I'm a developer.  My Dell Dimension is getting to out of date for development work on my own time and the Dell Latitude D610 maxes out memory at 2GB.  I really need the 4GB now on Vista for development these days.  VS2008 is a memory hog when you get into large multi-tier app development.

I assist my mom via Remote invitations.  I only saw her default home page once or twice before she accidentally changed it.  Now she wants it back to what it was originally.  There were more options for keeping the system up to date and utilities, etc on the page I recall, but it was similar.

Thanks for providing that link.  It is close so she will use it for now.  I'm hoping someone else who purchased a Dell Studio 17 laptop from Bestbuy can verify the default home page of IE 'out of the box' on their systems.

(Sorry for all the edits, but I read what I wrote and noticed it was poorly written.  One note:  at the time I purchased the Dell Studio 17 from Bestbuy I couldn't find the same configuration online from Dell for the same price.  It was a really great deal and the BestBuy folks were great working with my 72 year old mother. It was a deciding factor when I had to purchase a laptop for my daughter to use in college)

holzert,

The company I work for has a shared computer at a desk. They use Trend Micro and they still get infected. I would have like to run the other programs but I am a restricted user there. I keep all my files on the network and keep some backup applications on the computer. It the computer crashed today, I have everything but others that use the computer don't. Not my problem.

My Studio 17 is for my personal use. I love the backlit keyboard on it. My daughters HP died and I was forced to purchase a Studio 1537 Vista Home Premiun 64-bit system. I was a little leary about 64-bit but it seens that you have 2 ways to install a program, in the 64-bit programs folder or the 32-bit programs folder and haven't had an issue with installing anything. On a 64-bit system, you can add even more memory, depending on the version of Windows you're using.

I choose Avast because I like it's realtime scanner better than AVG. Symantex slows the computer down because it's a resource hog. Can't say much about the other programs. I have tried a few programs since 2001 and watch what I install. I make sure to install the programs I mentioned in the above link on the childrens computer and Update and password protect Avast from being shutdown. I know they won't scan it but the realtime scanner has done a great job over the past that I don't have to worry. I have those programs there if they tell me that have issues and I passworded the Administrator account with a special password so I can get in if they get locked out. Seen too many posts saying I forgot my Administrators password or they were locked out of their computers. On Vista, I had to download Ultimate Windows Tweaker For Vista to show the administrator account, then I password protected it.  On XP, I used to use Tune XP and Tweak UI(Powertoys from Microsoft).

Not a bad system. Change the Operating System, you may be able to add even more memory and have even a faster running machine. Maybe you can talk you boss into purchasing one for you or write it off as a business expense. If you do the later, remember me, LOL. I'll put my order in today.
